Re: New to me 850 turbo sedan
These cars are maintenance hogs. not god cars to poor boy and you have to do the work you're self with Oem or used parts. also I dont think Ide buy a pre 96 due to having an egr and weaker trans (Ive heard). (although they dont have ABS problems at least) You would definitely be better off with a Honda unless you really like the car. Old heavy dinosaur that was designed for rich people to take to the dealer. fair warning

850s are very satisfying to own, fun to drive and solid. A little quirky to troubleshoot but once you get the hang of it I think you will agree it's worth it. If you hit something in that Civic it would fold up like a paper bag.

I like the car... have always wanted a Volvo... I have almost as much in maintenance
as I spent buying it and only got the real car for 50 miles. I haven't gotten to enjoy it yet. I got it for a commuter, but I'll hang in there for a bit. I def don't mind the maintenance here and there but I don't want to be fixing it every other month either.

Turbos are easy to make more hp. Might be the easiest hp/dollar gain on your block.

They are maintenance intensive compared to say a Honda or Toyota, but with knowledge you can preempt a lot of it. Poke around on this forum and read....a lot. When I bought my first one I knew nothing about these. If it wasn't a big block V-8 I didn't even want to know. Shortly after I bought one for a beater I found this site and these guys are great. Thanks largely to the knowledge I picked up here I'm now pretty good at fixing them. Find a friendly local junk yard and make a mental inventory of what 850 parts are there. There isn't much demand so they'll sell them to you cheap. If you get into trouble on parts you can't find message me, we aren't that far away and I have a few.

I’ve had 3 850s and an S70. All of those have been reliable beasts - thanks to MVS I’ve been able to preempt a lot of stuff, as one should, been able to solve the rest, and maybe helped someone else along the way (big maybe
).
I kind of dread the day I have to get something else, and/or something newer - there are few things better than hearing the T5 spool up the 15G and then take off to match most other things rolling around here, at least.

I love mine, but it I get attached to cars and over look the impracticality. I even like how heavy it is. and try not to notice the gas bills for premium and 21 mpg. another cost is you have to have a second car to use while you fix the volvo. thats a deal breaker for most due to limited budget for insurance or parking space. Also it helps if you have space to keep 2 or 3 spare parts cars. No wonder I haven't seen an 850 on the road for 6 months. occasionally I see some early v70. I got the 850 because I didnt want to drive my 940 in the salt.
Now I need a v70 so I won't have to drive my 850 in the salt. enjoy them while you can before they are outlawed for carbon emissions. Im a little alarmed that there hasn't been more than a smattering on Craigslist in the last 6 months. that means they are gone. (850's)

I have a 2017 truck. Simply wanted to keep commute miles off it. I get what you're saying
