Dirk -- I believe I am in the somewhat small club who have replaced P80 starters without removing the fan/shroud. I'm here to tell you it can be done. Isn't pretty, but it is doable.

I don't doubt you at all Evan, but I prefer to keep as much skin on my knuckles as possible whenever I work in the engine department.

Today I was able to confirm that I have plenty of fuel pressure in the 850, so I just ordered a cam sensor and a crank sensor. I'm not sure if I need to confirm if the thing has spark. Because if it did, the stupid thing would be running. :?

Once I found out my 550 dollar 96 850 N/A only had 146K on it I decided to change out the timing belt and related items. Also did the rear breaks. My neighbor the Mechanic made a nice lil tool for the serpentine belt tentioner with the locking pin. I will post a pic of it. It is made of steel and fits perfect. He said he will make more if anybody is interested. I now have a little bit more piece of mind about my grocery getter.

Haha, S90 actually. I went to look at it this afternoon, hopefully I'll be bringing it home within the next week or so. I was hoping to get it towed home today, but the owner wants to wait until his duplicate title comes in the mail before he lets it go. Which I totally understand, people can be sketchy with titles and he wants to make sure it gets signed over properly.

You guys are tough on titles in NC aren’t you ? Possession of a car without a title is a big no no I think.

We don't talk about those things....

Just kidding. NC is pretty tough with titles. You can have a car without a title as long as you have a bill of sale I think, but it's quite the process to get a title if you bought the car without one. Unfortunately it's not a state like CT or NH where at a certain age they just don't even issue a title.
The owner of this car had lost the title, so he went to the DMV and got a duplicate since he's the registered owner. That's easy if you're the owner, but if you bought it without a title at all, you have to go through a whole process which involves having an inspector come out and make sure the VIN is correct and the car isn't stolen and that it's roadworthy, then you need to get an appraisal, then a surety bond, and if everything works out you'll get a title that has a "bonded" brand for something like 3-5 years.

Otherwise you just need buyer and seller signatures notarized... which is annoying because they get REALLY mad if anyone touches the title out of sight of a notary. I had a problem with that when I registered my GLT. The seller signed it before we realized it needed to be notarized. Then at the DMV they tax you for every little thing they possibly can!

SC on the other hand doesn't give a damn what you do... sign it and write what you paid, that's what they tax you on. No notary. I'd imagine getting a new title is pretty easy too.

We've got an app for changing ownership using digital IDs over here.. your way seems slightly more inconvenient.

Wow, compared to the Netherlands that is a pretty big hassle to get done. Here you just go to a postoffice with the owner and buyer of the car, both of them need to have ID with them and what we call the "licenseplate-card" and a letter you have with a special code, you point out who's the new owner of the car, pay 10 dollars and you're done (this is in a situation when you're buying an used car, don't think the regulation for new cars is much different) :-)

We have 53 states with different policies and procedures for registration, titles, and taxes. On top of it, if you go to CA , there is a smog check every two years that you need to pass, and modifications of any kind pretty much fail you.

I love the smell of beauracracy in the morning....

Wow, that would be amazing! It is very inconvenient... I've had an issue almost every time I buy a car because of the ridiculous title system in the wonderful state of North Carolina! That's why I prefer buying cars from South Carolina, it's a lot easier to just have the previous owner sign the title and I'm on my way.
