Best Interior and Carpet Cleaners

Post by dbm123 »

Hi,

Some of you that monitor other forums will know that I just bought a 1998 Volvo V70 GLT for my kids to drive. I got it for a song... a repair shop scared the owner with a repair estimate and he sold it to me. I did tell the seller that he should not sell the car and look elsewhere for repairs but he sold it to me anyway. I have the mechanics of the car under control. However, the interior of the car.... carpet, upholstery, etc. are DISGUSTING.... stains. spills, just gross crud all over everything....
My question here is: What can you recommend for interior cleaning products to try and help me continue to resurrect this car?

Thanks for any advise.

Hello,

I have had good results with a product called "stain x" to get stains out of carpets. When I bought my 850 it had really gross stains from what looked like a chokolate drink that spilled all over the console and the carpet.
This product sprays on and then you let it sit for a minute. Then you dab it with a cloth and the dirt lifts right up. I had to repeat the process a bunch of times and in the end the carpet was pretty moist. But after it dried I vacuumed it and it looked nice again. For cleaning plastic and vinyl parts I use windex first to get the big stuff off, and then I go over with Armor All.

Hope this helps.

I use the fabric cleaner call Tuff Stuff. It's sold everywhere and it works really good. When I got my wagon it was very dirty. I also detail cars for extra cash and use the Tuff Stuff a lot.

I never ever use Armor All. I tired the wax several years ago and it was good. As for the vinly treatment stuff, it will break down the vinyl and cause it to crack prematurely. Not to mention that it leaves a film on your glass interior. My experience was from 20 years ago so they may have changed their chemicals since then but I doubt it.

I have found ammonia mixed with water works very good (inexpensive too!). Works great on stains!

The set that was in my car seems to be in fairly good shape but just have 30 years of dirt and grime on them. my plan was to wash them in a commercial washer, hang them to dry, use a commercial steamer to flatten and reshape them and re-dye them if needed. any thoughts on this process? has anybody had any luck resurrecting their carpets?
Yes, I have. Top loading home washer. Use warm water, plenty of detergent, a few tablespoons of TSP if you have it and maybe some bleach. I allow them to rest between agitation cycles for a good soak. Then more agitation, soak, agitation, then soak overnight.

Works great!

You can also lay them down in a bathtub, soak overnight, then into the washer. You won't need much water this way as the mats are flat.

Chem-Dry I found is the best overall. The nice thing vs steam cleaning is the carpet stays cleaner afterwards. If the carpet is utterly destroyed you'll be better putting your money towards replacing it. June
