I think they proved that, when the team that designs the car for compliance with regulations chooses to cheat, the rules can be defeated.

I don't think they proved that the tests "don't really work".

I think the touchscreens and stuff in new cars are a lot worse than handsfree phone as far as distractions go. They just enable these distracted drivers. I know a lot of them won't let you use a lot of the features while the car is moving, but it's still a huge distraction.

Hahaha there would maybe be 5 people on the road!
I believe adding lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, automatic braking, and some of these other 'safety' systems, along with these ridiculous infotainment systems is just enabling distracted driving. Not saying safety systems are bad, but I think they are giving people this attitude of "oh it's okay to look at my phone, if anything happens my car will warn / stop for me."
Here is some screenshots of a YouTube video showing the 1985 Buick Riviera CRT touchscreen. YouTube was the only place I could find it. It was a extremely rare option and according to Motor week limited to 500 cars. 35 years later all cars have them LOL! The video is mislabeled as 1986 Century T Type and Riviera CRT when in fact it ts 1985 Century T Type and Riviera CRT. All 1986 Rivieras came with the CRT touchscreen and were completely different cars in every way from the 1985 Riviera. My first new car was a 1986 Buick Park Avenue coupe. I could have bought the Riviera but didn't like the touchscreen then and still don't now. Back then it was really like having a piece of the distant future extremely Avant-garde. Kind of like having the Delorean time machine from Back to the Future. June

I love the new Alfas. The Giulia Quadrifoglio is a really beautiful car!
I must admit, I do like the Stelvio, and I can't stand these modern smaller SUVs normally. I sat in a Quadrifoglio at the auto show back in November and the seat felt awesome. The seating position, the interior, just everything about it I love! I would really love to drive one. Plus if Jeremy Clarkson likes it, it must be good!

Anyway, I would like a wagon much more than an SUV. I wish more companies were making wagons still. For some reason, consumers are more interested in SUVs.

Agreed 100%! I've been saying this forever. These features have good intentions, and I have no doubt that they have prevented accidents, but these systems really do enable distracted drivers. Too many drivers feel they can just trust the car to keep them safe and do whatever they please. Not how it works!

Anyway...
I assembled one strut last night for the R, ended up spending the whole day replacing a caliper on my cousin's '98 V70 (junk rebuilt Autozone caliper blew out after like 4k miles... other 3 calipers are original at 252k!) instead of rebuilding the front suspension on the R like we had planned. The old spring seats are pretty shot!
He got the caliper off in 10 minutes, then we got sidetracked tool shopping at multiple Autozones after we got a replacement caliper since they have a bunch of Duralast tools 75% off right now. Definitely check out your local Autozone if you need (or don't need.... I certainly didn't need more) some tools!
Once we got back to install the caliper, the new bracket they gave us was bent, and we didn't notice it until it was installed and wouldn't let the rotor turn. Went back, fortunately they gave us back the original bracket, then we got it all back together and bled. The car finally stops safely and doesn't pull hard to the left when you brake!

Hopefully I'll be able to get my front suspension done today. VIDA/DICE is due here Tuesday, so with any luck I'll get that working, get the tune, and I should be driving it this week!

Also got the strut assembly removal job down to 1 minute 58 seconds. And people say this is a 3 hour job... pfffft...

I worked with somebody who had one of those Rivs with the CRT Touchscreen around the early 90's He was co-owner of a small biz. He was very protective of that car. I rode in it a few times. I never realized the Rivs with that option were so rare.

Only the 1985. All Riviera cars 1986 to 1989 came standard with the touchscreen. I looked at the 1986 new, but decided the Park Avenue 2 door with a normal dash was more what I wanted. Here are some pictures of the 1985 and 1986 and notice they have nothing in common. The first year offering in 1985 optional CRT is the Super rare care. All 86 to 89 had the CRT standard. The Riviera was quite expensive for a Buick of it's day. So I can understand why he was protective of it. He had a piece of the future 25 years early! June

Congratulations.
One year from now , I’ll be hitting the 240-250k mark on this car, and ETM And clutch ( still original, tested by 6 teen drivers) will be looming. It will kill me inside, but it will be time to sell Elizabeth the 1999 to someone who wants the sexy growl of the T5 stick shift. She is a great airport car, but I already have a good car for that and now that Uber is up and running even that doesn’t make sense. Grandma moves back to NY in Spring, and adds a 2013 Golf to the fleet, stick shift of course. Shes 88, so probably only a decade of driving left.

Muffin will take the S70 back to college for her MS, I'm still on track to hit 250k next March or earlier. That will be the sell point.

My cousin's NA '98 V70 is at 252k. Just blew out a rebuilt brake caliper the other day, meanwhile a good 80% of everything else is original on that car, including the other 3 calipers. It's a NY car with more rust than almost anything else I've seen except for my other cousin's girlfriend's '03 Silverado... that thing's much worse. Also spent most of its life in NY... and the non-existent rockers and rotted out body mounts show! Fortunately she doesn't drive that anymore.
It's just crazy how these Volvos just keep going and going... even while the car is crumbling around the drivetrain. The car still rides surprisingly well with new shocks and struts and the M56 is still silky smooth to shift with antique fluid (I keep telling him to change it since that M56 will likely end up in his S70 T5 eventually). The clutch has the weirdest on/off switch-feeling engagement I've ever felt, but it works.

The 850 is running again, apparently the engine was flooded. I took the spark plugs out which were nice and wet. After cleaning them put everything back together and started it with the gas pedal to the floor. It took about 20 sec. of cranking but then it started right up.

The lesson here is that moving the car around in the driveway a couple of times and never fully warming it up in cold weather is not a good idea

Thats great, but how did Ms 850LPT do on her driving test??

June has an opening in her "I Roll" course down in FL next week....

One of my kids failed three times, always on 'bad luck' (one time a police chase went right through the test zone, and she got totally rattled) - funnily enough she has always been the best driver in the house from day one.

It didn't turn too well and she was seriously upset. The instructor was very unclear in what he wanted her to do and she got confused one too many times. Too bad because she is a really good and confident driver like your daughter (maybe too confident).

But she did have to take the 04' which was just fine because that's the car she is going to drive later anyway. I turned the CEL off right before she went to the test knowing it wouldn't come back on that fast :D
They do a walk around check if you show up with your own car, and if there is any light on in the dash you can't take the test.
