You can get tools that will work at just about any Auto parts store.

9995666 is just for prying up the connector without squeezing the sleeve or cracking the connector by applying force unevenly. 9995666 pushes up on opposite sides simultaneously

You can use a small pry bar If you go gentle and work around the edge of the connector, just a nudge a little at a time. Or just nudge the connector a little on one side, then do the same on the opposite side, repeat as necessary. Baby step it.

The objective is to push the connector up evenly. If you get it uneven you may crack the connector or bend the sleeve.

Get some flat piece of metal strap 5/8 to 3/4 wide and no more than 1/8 thick but it is better if 1/16 thick. Aluminum or steel. Drill a
7 /16 hole in one end right at the end. Once drilled cut through the drilled a bit off of center towards end of the piece. Dress the end with file so the opening is 7/16 wide throughout. Now clamp in a vise 7/16 from the hole and use a hammer to beat the metal strap over 90 degrees. Now you have a tool with a U shaped opening on end at 90 degrees. It will slide sideways under the end fitting and pass the metal nipple on the sender/pump cap. Pull away from cap and it will slide the cuff into fitting that allows it to pass the ridge used to latch it on the nipple

Any way you can set up a Mechanical advantage? ... Perhaps, block on one side as a fulcrum, then lever the tool up. It does not need to move much to release.

A picture of the tool you made might be helpful. We could see what you are working with.

Thanks for all the help !
Will make a new tool tomorrow and have another go at it. I think first tool was too thin. Auto parts stores had NOTHING that would get under fitting .
Thought about bending a hacksaw blade 90 degrees and cutting pump pipes at base, but would still need to extract the cut bits.

I have the factory tool but have a homemade one for some fuel tnk fittings on other vehicles that I work on with larger fuel lines. SPecifically some diesels with 12mm nipple instead of 8mm. My tool is larger but made just as I described but with different width and drills. I don't think you can get the 90 defree needle nose pliers into the place needed on the 98-2000 AWD models as that cap is smaller.

He appears to be a fabricator. Hopefully the other thread will give him a clear vision of what the tool needs to do. From that he can fabricate a tool or a method that works.
