Brake Light Failure - 2001 V70 2.4

Post by jborchel »

We continue to have failures of the various brake lights on our V70. We get the "BRAKE LIGHT FAILURE" message on the counsel and when our Volvo specialist replaces one of the lights the message goes away for awhile until we get another one. Are there so many lights in the tail assembly that we are just cycling through the life of all of them or is this a chronic problem with the V70? Seems like this has been going on forever. We have 107K miles on the car?

Two things I learned early in my Volvo career is that if one bulb of a pair fails it is best to replace the pair so they are evenly matched. Also if one has a brass coloured end don't pair it with a bulb that has a steel coloured end.

I am not an electrician but someone who has been in the auto-electrcal trade for over 40 years told me that there are differences in the resistance which can upset the bulb failure device.
