Now I am at 157K miles and still going strong, but this is about the mileage where several fuel pumps were mentioned to have died by others here. I hope mine keeps going. Come to think of it, my fuel tank is almost on empty now. I hardly ever let this happen. Need to fill up today and try not to get in this predicament again.

I have a 98 S70 that is coming up on 210K miles. It gets a major service every 30K miles and oil change every 10K miles with Mobil1 oil and filter. Engine has worked its way to burning one quart of oil every 10K miles, not bad.

It still has the original fuel pump, alternator and water pump. Since my S70 will get a major service including timing belt change, should I have the fuel and water pump changed as preventative maintenance. The water pump has to come off for the timing belt change I'm wondering what is the average life of a water pump.

No need to worry about the fuel pump, it isn't even in the general location of the timing belt, but if your water pump has never been changed, this is a must. Most of them die right before the 210K mile point, so you're very lucky this hasn't happened yet. Also, if they haven't been done before, change out both of the tensioners for the TB and the Serp. (service) belt at this time as well and have them inspect the cam seals and replace them if there is any leaking at all.

MadeInJapan, I often drive this car on the interstate late at night or early morning hours. I would think a fuel pump gives little warning before failure and when it fails you will be on the side of the road. This being the case would it be a good idea to replace the fuel pump also? What should I expect to pay for a fuel pump replacement at a non-dealership Volvo specialty shop?

I was quoted $700 for the fuel pump and relay. Non-dealer but Volvo speciality shop. However, I'm sure they are not rebuilding the pump assembly with a new motor. Rather they are replacing the whole pump assembly which is about $325-$400 at online parts store. Plus $75.00 for the relay. After considering shop parts cost and labor this seems about right. I just ordered a new pump for about $75.00. I'm pretty sure I can handle this job and will save a ton of money
