Engine reving when brake pedal is applied?

Just wondered if anyone might know the answer to this problem when I come to a stop light or stop sign and apply the brake the engine for some unknown reason revs up to say 3000 rpm's or higher and won't drop down unless I throw the car into neutral. Any thoughts?

How many miles on it?
Being a 2002 I would thing first throttle body module. But may be also a vacuum issue ?

Have a look at the brake vacuum switch and pump - it sounds like it is sucking in excess air and fooling the ECM to rev up. Get this fixed, thats dangerous from both an untended acceleration and reduced braking performance issue - that can't end well.

Sounds like you've got one heck of a leaking brake booster. Try disconnecting the vacuum hose from the booster and plug the hose. Then see if the problem persists. Be careful if you drive the car with the hose disconnected as you will have to apply MUCH MORE foot pressure on the pedal to stop.
