Haldex Oil Change

Post by Metallo »

Hi,

XC70 2006

While working on the muffler, I also want to change the Haldex oil and the filter.

Now, since this is an Haldex 3, there is no space to remove the oil pump, unless you remove the propshaft, I do not want to do this as the oil pump was already changed 4 years ago.

However, I want to change the filter and possibly the Haldex oil.

Can I just remove the oil using a pump?

Should I first change the filter and then remove the oil?

Thank you
Alex

In about two hours after working in a very tight space and handcrafting your own tools you will regret you didn't drop exhaust and prop shaft. Also it's impossible to change all oil without removing the pump. Last time I replaced oil with pump on I was able to evacuate maybe 150 ml. With the pump out it's more like 600-700 ml.

OK, I have already removed the exhaust, today I will try the prop shaft.

Thanks

... working on it, I am removing the 6 x allen bolts, but the one on the top is difficult to undo unless I rotate the prop shaft, I tried but it seems to be hard to do it, how do I rotate it by hand?

My car is on cribbing stands and my handbrake is unlocked.

Thank you

I guess I have to put the car on jack stands to free the 4 wheels...

I am still fighting with getting the prop out, my car is still on cribbing stands, so I cannot rotate the prop, however, I managed to remove all the 6 x allen bolts and put one m8 bolt on the back of the flange to push it out.
When I shift the propeller towards the front I can get only 1/2" out (which I assume is the joint itself), then I hear as if something is blocking it.
I removed the central bearing holder already, is there anything else that I need to do? Anything on the front part?

I cannot understand what is preventing it to shift further than 1/2".

I also tried to slightly hammer the flange, but since I cannot rotate it, it is only from one side.

At this point, I do not know what to do to remove the prop.

I can try to put the cart on jack-stands (cribbing is much higher and solid) and see if by rotating and put another m8 bolt will help.

Any advice is very welcome

Thank you

OK, car is on the stands now, rotating one of the front wheels rotates the shaft, which is good.

What is not good is that I tried already 2 bolts on the back of the flange, no movement.
I wonder, the bolts are 20mm long, once they are all in they should push the shaft out, why does it not move??

Can I use PB Blaster all around the cv joint to see if that helps?
Also, on the back of the flange where the m8 20mm bolts screw in?

Do you think removing the central bearing holder and allowing the shaft to bend may help someway?

I hope somebody will answer today.

Thank you!

Bumping this thread to see if any active members can explain how to remove the propeller shaft flange? There are 6 large allen bolts that need removal but Metallo couldn't move the shaft more than 1/2" after removing those flange bolts.

In the top right are the prop flange allen bolts I've been PB blasting for weeks.

As noted by VTL only a small percent of Haldex oil can be siphoned out thru the fill plug. The oil pump needs removal to drain all the Haldex oil.

I tried to remove the driveshaft with no success too. I ended up just using a fluid pump to suck out the old fluid. I may try again to do the filter this summer...

Rear of the flange has 2 extra holes with threads, use M8 bolts to push the flange out. If the threads are rusted out you may have luck with a cold chisel and hammer on the CV joint itself. One more way is to unbolt the front CV and the support bearing and use the driveshaft itself as a reverse hammer (be ready to replace CV joint).
