Re: Marco's 2003 V70 T5 journey
Not sure about that ABS module, but the lights on the DIM (display) would point to the common 2002-2003 DIM failure (google about it). Can be fixed by Ebay services $150 USD. The battery must stay disconnected or it gets an SRS message

Current ABS module has been butchered by previous somebody, so can’t hurt and fiddling with it did result in working stuff albeit briefly.

When parts come make sure you got what you ordered.
Our stores here all take returns without question, so some people feel this mean so the can
...buy expensive part from store
....order cheap aftermarket part online
...install expensive part
...return cheap part to store for refund of expensive price
Next guy to buy name brand parts gets the wrong one.

One of the posters here in Tassie (von baron) was using Fuchs 4400 and he didn't get a great result.
It seems that these transmissions not only like JWS3309 standard fluid but are very particular about the brand. I have tried Chief full synthetic, Penrite full synthetic and now finally God sent Nulon Full synthetic and it has done wonders for both our transmissions.
Even the Tassie guy is impressed with Nulon after one drain and fill. Does your transmission have any annoying quirks?

I don’t think it has any annoying quirks, but that could be masked by the other annoying driveability quirks I’m currently experiencing. Haven’t started on changing the transmission fluid yet. I’m still under the weather and it’s very cold and wet out today.

Hi all! Feeling much better today, I decided to do some work on the car. None of my parts have arrived yet, so I thought I would double check the tcv hose routing, and also check the wastegate base setting.
You may recall one of my problems is surging on acceleration which is why I wanted to check this. The TCV is plumbed correctly.
Next, to remove the turbo heat shield. Can I just say what a monumental PITA it is to get the bolt with the spring on it undone in a RHD car! It involved me kneeling on the engine and awkwardly using a flexi head ratchet over a very small arc approximately 1000 cycles... Anyway, the wastegate was set to about 0.5psi instead of the required 4.4 for my B5234T3 engine. This required about 3 turns of shortening (plus another half for luck!). Put everything back together and test drive time. I needed to go do the recycling and garbage run (no kerbside collection in these parts) so a good excuse to take the Volvo.
Surging was still evident but not as bad. I figure the ecu needs to do some learning since I fitted a new TCV and have fiddled with the wastegate setting.
On the way home this happened!! This is the second time this has happened since opening the BCM up. The car also behaves VERY differently when the brake warnings are gone, and several of my own questions have been answered. In my brake failure thread, I asked about speed signals to the TCM, PCM, and DIM and whether they take different data paths. I asked because I DO have normal speedometer indications and normal transmission behaviour (which is something a lot of other posters with ABS faults experience differently eg. limp mode and no speedometer). My live data stream on my CAN/OBD scanner however, had an absent speed signal which led me to believe the PCM gets its speed signal from the BCM via a different path. After the lights cleared, I DO have a stable speed signal on my scanner. The other question I had was “does the abs fault prevent torque converter lockup?” And in my case it’s a YES, and very obvious when compared to driving without the fault codes present. I now hypothesise that my surge problem won’t go away or the ecu can’t learn properly until I banish the ABS fault permanently.

First drain and fill done on the transmission. A hair less than 5 quarts came out. Does that seem a little much? I put 4.5 back in, ran the engine and checked the level on the dipstick (that trans dipstick makes me mad every time with all the crap they put in the way!) and it still looks way high. Given the colour of the fluid I drained out, it’s been really overfull for a really long time!
Did I mention this is also the first of my 5 Volvos that doesn’t have a single oil leak?
