We took a 100km round trip in the Volvo today. Boost control is AWFUL! In other news, the fault lights went away again, twice! There is a pattern, when the engine compartment gets heat soaked, the problems go away. It’s a hot day here 30 celcius and we had everything functioning normally with no lights for the whole 50km drive home. Normally, electronics die when they get hot don’t they?

If there is a bad solder joint with a slight gap, then heat can cause the parts to expand into good contact.

And as you point out some components are heat sensitive and will fail if overheated. Such failures are not usually self-repairing, but some could be.

Not always. I use to keep a tank of refrigerant under the bench for locating components that crapped out when cold. You use the refrigerant to cool down the suspect, if the problem comes back, it is guilty as charged.

What's a "quart" or are you just being USA friendly to our intercontinental brothers?
I get no more than 3.6-3.8 litres from a drain and fill on my 2001 V70 T5 (by the way we have the same wheels!!)

I suspect the trans is super-filled which is a USA friendly term meaning stuffed (not broken just too full) :D

Ha! Yes just being US friendly :D

Is that 3.6-3.8 litres with the front jacked up or the car level?

In which case my transmission was probably at least a litre over full!!

Much was achieved today. First, I replaced the spark plugs. They are platinum NGK PFR6B. FCP lists the correct NGK platinum plug as a PFR6G-11. So out they go and nice basic coppers in.

Next was to double check the wastegate setting. Last week I did reset it to 4.5 psi. However, with everything connected it seems it was taking nearly 8psi to start cracking the wastegate open, so I lengthened the rod and re-tested it until it reliably starts to move at 4.5psi. Maybe this will settle the awful boost control?

Next I removed the intake to turbo hose and checked and cleaned the PTC etc.

Then on to the front struts. They are SACHS blue sticker units and not Volvo originals. It surprises me that at the current mileage of 121,000km (about 76k miles) it has already destroyed at least 2 sets of front struts. When I got the springs off it became obvious how shot they were!

I thought I had bought blue sticker SACHS but the ones shipped have white stickers but the same part number as the blues I removed. Spring seats are Volvo brand and in very good shape, so I left ‘em.

Next job was the front (or right) engine mount and transmission torque mount. To my surprise the front mount looked in perfect condition but no brand markings. The transmission mount was a hateful Scantech with a poly bush in it so good riddance. Both replaced with Hutchinson.

Bye!

Final job for the day was the fuel filter. You know, this is such an easy and inexpensive job on these cars, and yet so neglected!

Still waiting for the BCM to be delivered. According to the parcel tracking it’s been in the city since Friday (Tuesday here) but us rural bumpkins (40 minutes away) get shafted with deliveries, so stay tuned for next time when I attempt to remove the telephone, install a cup holder, and hopefully a new BCM.

More achievements today! This turned up today
3283FBFD-72BA-4731-AA02-C5FD02138A11.jpeg
I didn’t get to it because we weren’t home all day due to a scheduled power cut, but this evening before it got dark I managed to fit it.

Also, I fitted the cup holder in place of the phone keypad. Unfortunately it’s a different shade of grey!

Finally, I did a second drain and fill. 4 litres out, 3.4 back in and we’ll see how the level goes.

Tomorrow will be the moment of truth when the battery will be reconnected. Wish me luck!

That 3.6L is with the front wheels off the ground.

I'm pretty certain that the BCM will have no software whatsoever for the 2002 MY.

Check it in Vida Communication-Network. You will probably have a red icon indicating no software. A trip to dealer will be needed or if you can still read the old module's numbers you can connect to Doublebug and he can clone the old one.

One word. Aaaaaaargh!

I thought I was also supposed to have a yellow warning triangle with a new unprogrammed BCM fitted?

Anyway, very disappointed as the gamble of replacing a very suspect looking BCM has not paid off. :(

Not so.

Same warning lights on new virgin unprogrammed BCM as if not connected OR with wrong software.

Do you have Vida?
