The Dutch province of Flevoland has started traffic project with cyclists. Under the project, cyclists will get a green light earlier when using the Schwung app developed by Vialis. The province has for the test placed special traffic lights at a number of places. These will communicate with the app.
When a cyclist activates the app, the system can then determine the location, speed and distance to the closest traffic light and adjust the moment that it turns green. Cyclists can simply leave their smartphone in their bag or jacket so that they do not have to perform hands-on actions while driving. The app will switch itself off at the end of the bike ride. Users of the system can through the app find out how much time they have saved thanks to the smart traffic lights.
