ABS and Tracks Off dash lights on

Post by 5rivers »

Greetings all!!
I recently renewed a seized front passenger side caliper - piston was stuck in place, tiny pin-sized hole in seal. After cleaning everything, I decided to remove the speed sensor plug so I could apply some heat to the top backing plate screw (backing plate was missing!). I was able to get two of the three screws out that retain the backing plate, but not that top one. Then when reconnecting the caliper, a bit of brake fluid leaked out near, possibly onto, the speed sensor that was still unplugged. As many times as I have changed calipers on this and my previous V70, I still have difficulty effecting a quick reconnect between the brake hose and the caliper! :) The rotor is not perfect and will need to be replaced soon, but the pads are relatively new. And I still need to bleed all the brakes.
Since all of this, the ABS and Tracks off lights on the dash have come on and remained lit. Do I need to do a better job of cleaning the speed sensor connection or did I do something terribly wrong when I separated the sensor plug without disconnecting the battery? How do I fix this? No codes have come up on my OBD2 reader.
Appreciate any advice and recommendations on what to do next!

Greetings 5rivers

If the gap, between the speed or ABS sensor is too big or too small the ABS will fault. Is there a lot of rust around the ring and sensor?

If the car hasn't been driven, (You said still need to bleed brakes) the light won't reset until you get to 16 mph when the system does a self check.

Hi abscate!

Not sure what you mean by "ring". There was an incredible amount of rust. As a matter of fact, I had to bang the inside of the rim with a small sledge hammer just to get it off the hub!! The piston was seized, and the glides were loaded with rust. I could see why nothing was moving.
I did do a quick and dirty bleed of the brake system, but need to wait until my helper is available to really bleed them so there are no bubbles in the system. I've driven from Syracuse to the north country a week or so ago, and have to make the return trip soon. I'll have a chance to look more closely at the sensor et al over the coming weekend.

Well....an update....after spending a few days spraying rust penetrate on the back of the hub and getting in there with a small screwdriver, I was able to remove quite a bit of the rust buildup. When I removed the speed sensor, it was caked with rust gunk. I picked up a newer sensor at the p-n-p and after installing that, reloading the tire, bleeding all the brakes, etc...the ABS and Tracks Off dash lights went off! Hip-hip-horray :)

If I still have the car this summer, I will have to work at removing the control arm (bushing is torn) and the tie rod, to install a newer hub. I would imagine the rust buildup will reoccur! I also noticed the lines to the steering rack are beginning to show signs of wear and will need to replace those as well. Aaahhh, the signs of aging!
