99 V70 with strange no-start condition and code

Post by wooshuck »

Hello to all and thanks for the help you gave on my 850, which is moving along. Just need to replace the struts, get an alignment and get rid of a parasitic drain on the car when it sits.

But my friend Tom has a bigger problem.

He bought a 99 V70 from a guy who had stored it for a long time. It drove mostly ok until he parked it, then it would not start.

It's an AT-equipped wagon.

Tom went through and changed or tested a lot of parts over several months: cam and crank sensors, timing belt, checked spark at the five individual cylinders, kept battery charged, checked and cleaned entire fuel system and pump (good pressure at Schrader valves) and in the course of events, I put my new, better OBD-II meter on it.

Only one code: P0605. I have got two interpretations of that:

1. Bad ground in general

2. Bad throttle control module's read-only-memory (ROM).

We are also wondering about the Electronic control module, which in this car is the all-electronic version.

I am interested in any ideas at all that you have.

Thanks,
Woosh

I think you got a case of the scanner mistranslating the DTC. I could not definitely pin P0605 to a 1999 V70 and what I did find was from a general conversion table that listed the TCM.

P0605 does mean internal fault in control module. However P0650 P605 is assigned to different control modules on different models. ECM on some, EFI or TCM on others.

You really need to get VIDA/DiCE on this one.

Throw some ether into it and see if it breathes fire. If you onlyhave the previous owner anecdote that it 'ran fine before parked' then it has to treated as a complete INOP, starting at zero.

FOr instance - pressure at the fuel rail has to be dead on 50-55 psi, not just 'present'

You will need vIDA to get to the end of this.

Thank for your help;

1. OK, how do I get VIDA/DICE and what will this cost?

2. Also: It's P0605, NOT P0650

3. How do I thank people?

1. DiCE ~ $80.00 on eBay. A better version of Vida can be found here.

2. Typo corrected above.

3. Thumbs up in the upper right corner of the post.

That maps to TCM -0049 control unit memory fault.

Leave that alone until you get it running a least.
