Tire size

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Tire size

Post by MPOOL »

I recently purchased a 2006 S80 with 17" tires. Prior to that I have been driving a 2004 S80 with 16" tires. Both are front wheel drive 2.5T s. I like the feel of the 16" wheels better than the 17" ones. Also I had just bought tires for the 2004 before it became too expensive to fix. I would like to put the 16" tires on the 2006 which now needs tires. I get mixed messages from tire sites about doing this. Has anyone had any experience with this ? I understand the question of fit re rotors and brakes comes in but maybe that is hopefully a non issue. Thanking you in advance for your thoughts.

If the front brakes on the 2006 are larger than the 2004 there may be a problem.

As you haven't given the actual sizes I can't comment on the difference and possible impact to the speedometer calibration.

The front brake rotors are the same size on both years. Same bolt pattern also.

Tire sizes 2004 215/55R 16
2006 225/50R 17

Thank you for your knowledge about this.

Tire diameter of a 215/55/16 is 643mm and is correct size for a 2004 S80

Tire diameter of a 225/50/17 is 647mm and is approximately 0.62% larger

Both sizes are in the 2006 owner's manual so should be OK for the 2004 if brake size is not an issue

Tire circumference is -2.3% shorter. The speedometer would be off -2.3%.
Unless the ECM was re-calibrated to the new tire size.

At a indicated speed of 70 MPH. The car would be moving 70 mph * .977 = 68.39 mph.

Looking through the dimension. If you have a rubbing problems, it is most likely the offset of the rims.
