Thanks for all the suggestions ... upon even further investigation it appears to be an intake gasket failure at cylinder #1, and possibly a leak around the aforementioned vacuum elbow. I'll know more once I get the intake removed. Parts are on order but since I live in the great white north it will be a week or so before they get here - we seriously need a better option for decent parts in Canada.

Could be a intake manifold gasket leak at #1. Fire it up and spray some starting fluid around intake manifold port #1. If there is a intake manifold gasket leak at #1, it will suck in starting fluid and you will hear the engine surge. If it does surge, let it scare you and back off on the starting fluid.
Lower compression at #1 could be the cause also.
