2004 S60 headlight glass

Post by StickyPocket »

Randomly found a crack in my driver side headlight with no other damage:

Must have had a rock hit it while driving or something. Don't want water getting in there. Found some videos online showing replacement of just the glass lens, but they're not that comprehensive. Looks like I'd have to use heat to remove the glued on lens? Does anyone have any tips? Do the replacements (~$60) come with glue as well?

Best is buy a used assembly (Valeo) from ebay or junk yard.
Ebay is about $70, junk yard about $25.

Tips: watch this youtube video:

Last year for glass headlights... which is disappointing. There's no glue..once you get the light out there are clips all around holding lens on. I just pop these off with a screw driver Probably not the official Volvo way but I don't work there either. Haha. Anyway, you have to remove ( at least one side) of the front bumper cover. There's a bolt underneath the head light, one on the side by fender and two on top. the wheel has to come off..or in your case turn the wheel all the way to the right for access. you have to drill the rivets out to loosen cover. There's a hole inside the the wheel well and a t25 bolt to loosen. You have to pry off the plastic trim piece in bumper.. there's a hole their where a bolt holds the bumper cover on, and pop off cover over baby wiper blade and use a 8 mm to remove.not in this order you understand.. I'm better doing it than explaining. Sorry. Hope this helps gigantic PITA..The 90's P 80's were much simpler ... thanks Volvo for making it so much harder...my doctor said I'm not getting enough stress in my diet!!

You neither need to remove the wheel nor drill the rivets holding the wheel well interior. Unless someone before you has mounted the stuff wrong. The little torx to loosen the front plastic cover of the car is exposed by a small cutout. A little spray lubricant does wonders before you start turning it.

Taking the front cover off is a ten minute job once you figure out how to do it. I'm sure YouTube has something showing how it's done.

Thanks all. I guess if I can get a complete used assembly at a junkyard for less than the price of a new glass lens then that's the obvious way to go.

Put some MMA glue on the crack to keep water out - you can take the summer to go hunt one in junkyards that way, too. Even packing tape will work.

I assume other years/models are compatible. 01-04 S60? Others?

I got 2004 S60 glass headlights I pulled for $25 each. I don't care for the plastic lens on my 2007 XC70 so I'll try swapping them. The plastic lens are glued so I'll need to toss them in oven.
