2000 Volvo V40 (4 cylinder)
I had a radiator go on me about two weeks ago, and after replacing all that, I started getting a misfire on cylinder 3 in the mornings after sitting overnight. I pulled the number 3 plug and there was a little oil on the threads. Ignition coils are fairly new. I'm having a compression test done at the neighborhood shop, but I'm betting the head gasket is going.
I'm a fairly competent shade tree mechanic. I do brakes, replace the odd part that goes, but I've never done a head gasket job. I know I'd save a ton of money, but is it doable for someone like me? I've looked around and there isn't a real good step-by-step walkthrough that I've found so far. Also, it looks like there are a few special Volvo tools involved.
Any thoughts or advice would be welcomed.

Check Amazon (use the MVS link!) for a Haynes Repair Manual.
I think the only one is a hardcover that includes S40 models back to 1996.
It's produced in the UK, but generally has the information needed. Not a perfect step-by-step, but it's better than nothing.
I used it when I did the VVT sprocket and referred to it when I did the valve seals on my 850 (virtually the same engine, less one cylinder).
As for the head gasket replacement itself, I never did one on a Volvo whiteblock.
I'll bet if you search for a headgasket replacement on a 850 or early S70, you'll find a lot of info. that will be relevant to your S40's engine.
At a minimum, you will need a camshaft holding tool and a 1/2" drive torque wrench which are reasonably priced.

Whew. Looks like my fatalistic thinking got the best of me. The compression test came back fine and they said the head gasket seemed fine, so maybe we're looking at an injector acting up.
