2000 T5 no start , starting after sitting overnight...

2000 T5 no start , starting after sitting overnight...

Greetings .I'm back . Drove to work yesterday and ran fine ( 10miles ).. Drove home and made a 30 minute stop . Needed to cranks to start . Drove 9 miles and made a 5 minute stop . Would turn over but no start. Jumped fuel relay and still wouldn't start. Towed home. Restarted today with no problem . I suspect coolant temp sensor or cam sensor . Any thoughts ?

The ECT sensor will not keep the engine from starting. An overheated fuel pump doesn't care if the relay is jumped, listen for the pump priming when you switch the key to posII.

There is just not enough data in your post to make an educated guess.

Thanks for the reply. The no start issue has happened before a year or so ago. First time it was the coolant sensor with a code showing. The next time a year or so later, it was a bad fuel pump relay. I started carrying a jumper wire in case of this type of headache . The car sat for nearly 5 hours before being towed and attempted to be started at home, so the thought of a over heated fuel pump doesn't seem to be the cause in my thinking. It started on the first try after sitting overnight.

What ohm range should a properly working crank sensor be in when testing with a digital meter ?

Ch3ck fuel pressure at rail. ME7 needs 50 psi solid. Measuring it elimitates all the subjective guesswork and let’s ypu move on the diagnostic tree. A shot of ether is a cheaper way to determine fuel vs ignition problem.

Been busy. Started car today no problem. Checked fuel pressure with a tire gauge while running and got over 50 psi. Checked pressure after tuning car off and got 20 psi. Do I need to drive this car till I get a no start , so I can check for a fuel delivery issue with ether ? Starting to lose trust in this car.

Keep some ether in the car ( bring inside in hot weather) and diagnose bad fuel delivery with a 3 second shot next time it occurs

From there , you can service fuel delivery

It’s much better on 99-2000 than previous. I’m original fuel pump and relay.

Took it out for a few errands . Maybe tens miles . Came out to head home and got a no start . Sprayed starter fluid and still would not start. Towed it home . Let it set for a hour or so and the SOB started. Fuel pump was installed by shop ,but of a unknown brand a few years ago. My frustration and trust of this car has about reached the point of getting rid of it.

If it’s did not kick on starter fluid that is pointing away from fuel delivery

Time to look at ignition.

Coils, plugs, check voltages

Ignition maybe an issue to look at. On the last no start, I had trouble getting the key out of the ignition switch when I parked. It turned back past position 1. Had to wiggle it back and forth and push in to get it out. Could I be looking at antenna ring replacement or the ignition switch ? I remember having to play with getting the key out before when parking.
