99 Volvo S70 T5 transmission issue.

Post by Namieh »

I know this is my first post. I have a 99 s70 t5 auto with 208k.
It runs great and never had any transmission issues.
I was driving it one day on the interstate and all the sudden the transmission acted like it downshifted and went into a false neutral. I got off an exit ramp and pulled to a stop. Shut off the car and restarted and still false neutral. I found if I revved it enough I could get it to move enough to coast down to a parking lot. I left it there and came back a couple hours later and false neutral was gone. I made it about 6 blocks and it went back into false neutral. Got towed home with a chain and it's sat since. I can go out right now and start it and break boost it and it holds in gear. I can drive it till it starts warming up and it will go into false neutral. I have no flashing lights for transmission or cels. I just don't get it. No signs, no previous symptoms it just happened suddenly. Interestingly enough I had a simlar issue with my colorado and but had symptoms starting several months before it completely went out. I'm wondering if anyone's heard of similar issues. I don't really feel like a rebuild or taking a chance on a used auto. I've been trying to find a 5 speed car in the local junkyard and convert to manual (have experience with this in other vehicles) but if I could find a relatively cheap fix I'd like that. I miss my volvo.

Start with the simple stuff. When was the trans fluid last changed? If it has been a long time or unknown it is way past due.

You could try a drain and fill. There is a drain plug on the trans and usually when you do a drain you will get 3.5 litres to drain out. Measure what comes out and re-fill through the dip-stick the same amount. Check the old fluid for color and smell. If you are very lucky you may have caught the trans in time. If you get any improvement and can drive the car, drive it until the fluid is warm and then drain and fill again. You will need to do this 3 times minimum. There is another way to do a more thorough flush by disconnecting the upper trans cooler line on the radiator. Check in the database for the method. You will need about 12 quarts to get the fluid nice and clean. Check you have the right type of trans fluid for your car.

If that doesn't work, then you have a more serious issue with the trans. Get back to us and let us know how you get on.

Well i finally did this. Fluid is clean, and at first acted like it was fixed, but then went into false neutral. Now i have the front end off the ground and discovered the passenger wheel will not move whatsoever. Its strange, im going to take the rim off and try to move it with a socket and a big breaker bar on the axle nut.

It seems to me whats going on is when it warms up for some reason the passenger side locks up completely and it goes into false neutral.
