Quick Sunday update.

I spent a few hours studying camshaft diagrams last night and finally got around to looking at the timing. Like I have posted earlier my power was non existent in the lower part of the room band. To the point of the engine bogging down under 2k rpms while trying to accelerate out of turns, parking lots, across traffic etc...

So I took another look at the timing on the cams. Looks like the intake cam had jumped one tooth clockwise ahead of the proper timing when I was futzing with the belt. The good news is that Volvo cams are adjustable!

That being said I loosened the three 10 mm bolts on the cam gear cranked the cam counterclockwise and voila. Car is back to normal!

Special thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread:

It really helped me immensely.

Moral of the story... Even if it's 10 degrees F in your garage, double check your timing.

Nice. I actually adjusted mine with an old credit card. Just fed it into the belt, big screwdriver for leverage on the cam sprocket, and rotated the card out.

Anything to avoid having to reset the timing gears position relative to the cam shafts down the line is a good method.

Another update. Seems like whenever it's super hot or super cold Herman needs work. Today was 95 degrees F.

Took the car to the shop to get aligned this morning and the shop owner tells me the diver side hub has gone and he can't align it. No biggie. The passenger side went bad over the winter so no suprise there. Took me about 2 hours to replace the hub. I gotta say it's really not a bad job. But, boy am I dirty.

I also replaced the brake pads while I was in there and attempted to replace the brake lines but the brake lines are seized at the connection between the flexible hose and the hard line. Looks like I'll have to cut the hard lines and reflange them with some fresh nuts. I will be honest I hate making flanges. I failed a few times as a kid and they still make me nervous. Time to read up on this. :-)

Eastwood sells a flare kit that works quite well. Although I'm not sure which flare the 850 uses. Double? Single? Bubble?

Okay just read the article I have a few follow up questions.

Do I need a metric or sae sized tool?

I stopped before the line but on the hard line was too damaged. But I wouldn't want to reuse it.

So can I use a double flare tool with a double flare but as long as the threads are the same size?

Looks like the only rental tools around here are double flares.

I'll buy the tool if I need to. Just gotta find the correct line nuts.
