Where is the sending unit located on an 89 740 wagon with the third row back seat?

It is in the fuel tank as part of the in-tank pump unit. access is through the luggage compartment floor.

How exactly do I do that? I've tried lifting the carpet up, but it is stuck down pretty good.

Whichever side of the car the fuel filler is located you will find a part of the luggage compartment floor, close to the bodywork, that will hinge upwards. The hinges are nearest to the outside of the car.

Open this panel, remove 3 screws that hold the hinges and pull the floor forwards and upwards. You should then see the top of the fuel tank with a removeable cover plate. Remove the cover and you should see the pump/sender unit. Remove it carefully as it is fragile.

Before starting to remove this unit you should disconnect the battery earth (ground) lead.
