high pitched noise not pw pump

Post by sleeper850 »

I just replaced my power steering pump on my 95 turbo wagon and there is still a groaning noise that increases pitch as I rev the engine. The timing belt and tensioner are new. Any suggestions on what the noise is

Do you think it's from the serpentine (service belt) area? If so, could be the tensioner or even the water pump. Is it dependent on traveling speed....does it happen at idle or only when you're moving?

This occurs at idle and while driving. I was hoping and thinking it is the water pump. I did flush out the pw pump with atf.

The ps fluid also seems to be forcing its way out of the top of the resovoir sometimes. I put a stethoscope on it and it seems like the new ps pump is making the sound. Would air in the system make this happen?

It could....take the cap off and have a friend watch it as you move your steering wheel back and forth. see if air bubbles come up. If this is the issue it will straighten itself out after awhile. If not, then it's something else.

If you have air in the p/s system, you can try jacking the front end up high enough so the tires are not touching the ground. Start the car and SLOWLY turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a few times. That will usually get the air out of the system. Be sure to check the fluid level afterwards.

P.S. Use jackstands and leave the P.S. cap on while you do this so you don't make a mess.

I'm having the same prob with '99 S70. My mechanic has replaced the PS pump, belt tensioner, torque rod bushing and engine mount in an effort to fix the problem. I just picked it up today and it's doing the SAME thing. It's definitely making the noise from the steering. What vacuum line did you replace?

I cannot recall what vacuum line my mechanic replaced. Have you tried spraying a solution on your vac lines to check for a leak? Check your elbows as well, they can look okay but have cracks. Somewhere on this site has the locations for the lines. Also check the line that is in top front of the engine. It is close to and runs parallel to the cover with the volvo logo. I am not able to look at my engine and tell you exactly where it is bc some drunk driver w/o insurance totalled my wagon in my driveway about 8 months ago. I hope this helps.
