2003 xc90 front end noise

Post by 2324Shea »

so I recently was given my dad's 2003 Volvo XC90 and when I first got it I had to replace all of the brake pads and rotors. this past weekend I replaced the back shocks as well as the front shocks and lower control arms and ball joints as well as new sway bar links in the front. I had it aligned the next day and put on all new tires a few days ago. today I was driving down the road and the right front started to rattle excessively and I thought it was just the road so I slowed down and that's when I heard what almost sounded like something was loose in the front end. I stopped to check and found out my right front brake line was leaking excessively so drove back home slowly and at times it sounded like the front end was going to fall apart with metal hitting metal sounds. now on the drive back I played with the steering a bit and it felt loose. like when I swerved left and right really quickly and stopped it felt like the car tires were still looses and moving left to right by themselves. any thoughts on what it might be?

You need to get both wheels off the ground and do a shake down of all the parts. If you really can't find anything loose go back and have the tire balance checked besides checking for a blister or out of round tire. No other way to determine the issue because you did so much work all at once.

It went away but I just noticed it today and only seems to be doing it when I accelerate and after 60mph it disappears. When it happens it sounds like metal rubbing against metal possibly and the whole car seems to sort of vibrate and shake. I’m thinking a bad drivers side cv axle maybe

First thing to do is recheck your work. If it wasn't making the noise before and started after you did the extensive work on the front suspension that is the best place to start. As the wheel will be off you can check the driver side CV boot and make sure the axle is properly seated and installed.

Is your car FWD or AWD and is it the 2.5T or 2.9T?
