Hows it doing after ll these tuneups like the trans fluid, all went well ?cbpitt01 wrote: ↑24 Jul 2019, 17:06 Well, I didn’t do it today (last week), and I didn’t do it myself (dealer), but at 228,000 miles, I’ve had brake flush/fill, power steering flush/fill, auto trans drain/fill, fuel filter replacement, PCV service, and timing belt/accessory belt/water pump (and other little bits) replacement. I’m about 12,000 miles early on the timing belt service but I plan on a few thousand-mile-each-way road trips in the next 6 months, so I figured why stretch my luck. Car has been very good to me so far, so I figured I’d treat it early.
I know most say to stay away from the “stealership”, but I feel Paramount Volvo (Hickory NC) has always treated me fairly on service prices, and they did it all in 1-1/2 days. The final price came in several hundred dollars less than I expected.
Ready for another 120,000 miles (on the timing belt, at least)!
What did you do to your P2 Volvo today?

Yeah, did you include a new fuel filter? It's THE overlooked maintenance item.

Yes, Georgeandkira, new fuel filter is on my list of replaced items. You must have overlooked it.
And Mikele82, the car is doing great! Just came back from a 1200 mile trip to/from Florida. Had that wagon loaded down. Not a vacation
; helped my sister move. The saving grace of the trip was that her boss treated us all to The Rolling Stones at Jax stadium last Friday night - in a suite no less!

Thanks, abscate!
Yes, everyone asks why I would put that money into an “old car”, and that’s the exact answer I give them - it IS much less than 5 years of payments! And I explain that it’s mostly preventive maintenance so that I hopefully don’t have any catastrophically huge failures that would make me consider scrapping the car.

Daughter finally found the time and some cash to "allow" dad to do some work on her beast of a car. So, last weekend, I replaced the starter (and reclaimed my crowbar), plugs (long story short, I thought plugs were the cause of an issue. They weren't, but were at least 15k past replacement and the center electrodes were all but gone), thermostat & temperature sensor (that fixed the issue), and added four quarts of oil (yeah, four). Engine runs rough for a minute when first started, but then smooths out.
Thought I'd replace the burned out driver's side rear brake light. Easy-peasy. Except that the previous kucklehead broke the upper taillight socket the last time, and used a screw and some kind of tar-like adhesive to get it to work. Now, it's a trip to eBay, on my dime, for an intact assembly.
Should have left well enough alone but, idiot that I am, I borrowed the scanner from O'Reilly's and came away with 11 codes, indicating issues with the Evap system (hopefully, just a hose somewhere), the camshaft reset valve (whatever that is), and the turbocharger (those are the ones that really scare me). So, the to-do list now reads (in no particular order):
- Replace the upper taillight
- Replace the right rear wheel bearing/hub
- Fix the evap system
- Fix/replace the camshaft reset valve
- Troubleshoot/fix? the turbocharger issue
- Change the oil and filter
- Troubleshoot the automatic locks, which occasionally lock up the car all by themselves (Daughter has no fob) and refuse to let her in.
- Replace the fuel filter (so Georgeandkira stays off my case!)
Thanks, in advance, to everyone who has, and will, post solutions here!

^^ That's a list!
My wife's been driving Betty the Volvo for a couple of weeks. She mentioned a noise from the front end - tie rods or something she says? (I was impressed!) I said, oh, that's probably those front control arms I need to replace, there's a clunk.
Today I took it, and wow...the right front is clunking and clicking like a brake caliper is falling off or the wheel is loose! Checked wheel, all solid. Slowly cruised through some bumps and gutters to differentiate this noise from the deeper control arm bushing clunk. Lifted up and down on the RF fender and there's a loud click there. Guess that's what I'm doing this weekend.
Got to be strut (new) or hub or brake related I think. A CV joint doesn't click when you lift up does it? Steering is very solid, no play.
I'll climb under later.
< EDIT >
It's got to be somewhere in here.....
or here.......
Maybe a sway bar end link?

Sway bar end links can click. I'd go OEM or blue box genuine Volvo only on those. Aftermarkets and you'll be changing again in 15k miles.

FIXED! Cheap!....(free!) - this fits well in the Cheapskate Repair Model.
It was the upper hardware on the RF end link. They looked new, the boots were good, no play......but only when the suspension is hanging down and they're bound up! Put it back down and it's loose as hell. Ready to order new. Cranked down the torx and 17mm nut, and boom, it's gone!
Cut down a tree without maiming anyone, fixed Betty for free, and fixed the fridge - I'm at 100% today! I think I'll go sit under a shady tree and not jinx it.

This week Betty took the visiting flatlander niece and nephew for a real trail ride. They loved it...15 miles worth! (half downhill of course)
And today she brought home an 8' chunk of "hog panel" to keep the deer out of the garden. Those troublesome deers have moved to town for the convenience.
