Picked up a bunch of parts from a really great Volvo tech on Friday. In the lot of parts was an Alpine 6 disc cd changer. Reminds me of my dad's old 3-series and my mom's old discovery. Figure I'll install it in the trunk to keep it period correct. Now to only find six CDs to play.

I still have 2 of these in my stash of parts. Actually sold another to someone on Vancouver Island recently who loves CD's!

One of the 2 actually mounts into the glove-box!

That's awesome!

I remember back in the early 2000's I wanted a CD player in my car more than anything. I hooked a Walkman up to a tape adapter and played burned CD's that I mixed myself and thought it was so cool.

Today? Bluetooth over FM with a music streaming service and almost infinite music. Crazy how much technology has changed.

I had a younger tech at an oil change place call my 850 "vintage" and "old school" a few weeks back.

I wonder if I can track down some more neat things like this to put into my 850.

I have one of them in the trunk of my R. The problem ia that even though it is properly mouted, anything but perfect roads make the CDs jump.

What does the yellow wire connect to? Is it a ground?

I'm always amazed at things like this. This was once (not that long ago really) the height of technology. How could anyone want anything more than loading up one of these with your favorite CDs for the road. Today? Like you said. Bluetooth and a seemingly endless supply of song and podcasts.

A lot of design and engineering went into that CD changer and it's effectively useless at this point. Really stunning to think about how certain technologies popped into and out of existence and usefulness so quickly.

I fitted a brand new one (25 GBP including shipping from the US to the UK) to my 855 earlier this year.

The Volvo branded version is also Alpine but it has a mini DIN cable and takes its power from the electric antenna or antenna booster at the back. The Alpine version gets its power from the front, which is what the yellow wire is for. It's usually piggy-backed onto the feed for the radio I think.

Do you know you are supposed to set these (one on each side) for vertical or horizontal mounting? This one is set for vertical.

I do use the CD changer sometimes but most of my music is on my phone or a memory stick played through an FM transmitter that cost about the same as one CD.

I love these setups but floor panels and brackets are really hard to find and they're NLA from Volvo.

I was lucky with those. Somebody local to me on the UK Volvo forum advertised the floor panel for sale just after I got the car. I then realised you needed the bracket too, and forgot about it for a while. Eventually I got round to fitting the changer with the bracket I did have, which fitted around the floorboard and had the changer in view.

I wasn't really satisfied with that arrangement so I put a wanted ad on the same forum and got a response within a couple of days.

Constant Power .
If you have the original DIN signal cable to the HU,
you should also have a 2 pin factory power cable
taped and stowed with it back there, too.
