Help with pulled codes

Post by Georgeandkira »

Hello, We're on our 3rd V70 but today I looked at a 2004 XC-90 for sale at a local gas station.
It has the same 5 cylinder engine I'm driving now.
It drove quite well though it had no discernible turbo boost.
It shifted well, had clean oil on the dipstick though a few chunks of build-up on the filler cap and oil fill grille.
The AC worked just fine too.
I pulled 17 codes with my BSR-PPC reader.
There was no Check Engine Light
The CEL did light up appropriately with the start-up circuit.

I used CAPS after each code and definition for clarity.

1) ECM 2A2A - Rear HO2S bank #1 heating. I WILL CHANGE THE REAR O2 SENSOR
2) CEM 1A66 - Communication with ICM. NO IDEA WHAT ICM MEANS
3) CEM 5B01 - LH heating element. HEATING ELEMENT OF WHAT?
4) CEM 6C48 - Transponder type. WHICH TRANSPONDER?
5) CEM 6C49 - Steering Column Lock Module. KEY WORKED OK. THE DISABLER RING (see above)
6) CEM 8F2D - Windshield Wipers / wiper. WIPERS AND WASHERS WORKED OK
7) CEM 8F2E - Windshield Wipers / wiper. as above
8) ECM 4801 - TWC efficiency bank 1. WHAT IS TWC?
9) DDM 0025 - BUT 0035 REFERRED TO THE PASSENGER WINDOW
10) PDM 0025 - as above
11) UEM 0035 - reading lamp
12) UEM 0037 - reading lamp
13) UEM 0039 - General Courtesy lighting
14) UEM 0080 - Rain Sensor
15) PCM 002A - NO PCM CODES LISTED
16) PCM 002B - as above
17) PCM 0023 - as above

Any help with any of these will be much appreciated.
1) I'm sure the heating element of the sensor went bad so it's self explanitory
2) as stated, what's an ICM and where should I look?
3) LH (left hand?) heating element?
4 + 5) The anti-theft transponder pick-up ring?
6 + 7) Any clue here as the wipers and washers work.
8) TWC efficiency? no clue
9 + 10) Another odd Volvo window positioning code?
11 - 14) I can live with these. I'll check the bulbs and throw water on the windshield
15 - 17) There were no PCM definition nor heading let alone codes listed.

Any help at all with these puzzlers. thanks George (and Kira)
I have no idea how the "8" turned into an emoji

Good chance at least some of the 17 codes are artifacts left over from a problem that is history.
Do some house cleaning, clear the codes and see what comes back.

2. Infotainment Control Module.
3 Left Hand Seat heating element.
4 & 5 The transponder in the Key. Wrong transponder, Defective transponder, No transponder or two good transponders to close to the ignition at the same time.
6 & 7 Does the rain sensor work?
8. Three Way Catalytic converter. There are lots of things that can trip this code.
9&10 DDM/PDM-0025 DDM/PDM-0025 Door mirror motor. Disconnected
  • Open-circuit in the signal cable to the door mirror heating or motors (including the motor for electric folding door mirrors)
    Blown fuse 11C/35 or 11C/36.
    Damaged defroster in external mirror.
15-17 Powertrain Control Module same as ECM & ECU.

Clean them out and run, like Rick says

If y-I put a space between the 8 and the ) you get 8 )

If you don’t, you get 8)

You can also use the list function

You can also force pHP codes to be read literally with tags but that marks you s seriously OCD

I typed a long reply and hit submit earlier today so where is it????

The O2 sensor code is very unlikely to be fixed with a sensor. Sensor heater elements burn out and don't heal themselves. If it was a current problem the MIL woould be on. It could be a connector issue or the key was on and someone unplugged it. Another clear it and see what happens deal.
Most of these codes are ghost codes. Ones that show up on heavily networked cars of many makes but you do nothing without a noted operation problem. DDM and PDM codes for windows show up due to switch fidgeting by kids or bored adults. Agree that seat heater has an open. The mirror codes are another that shows up with no mirror issues. It is believed the slamming of door jars connector and it is open for an instant. My 2004 V70R had those and mirror always worked.
The lamp codes set if LEDs are used in those positions or license plate lamp.

Yes jimmy57, I read your original reply and POOF- it was gone. 'Twas very confusing as I wanted to show it to someone.

Not the first time posts have vanished here.

Also, I forgot to mention that the radio is dead. I checked the fuse. There's a rear camera and the radio has a small screen built in.

Again, thanks for any and all info. That the car appeared to have ferried kids about makes me think an adult driver knelt on the driver's seat (to hit a misbehaving kid) breaking the heating element. Ha-ha.

The mirror connector slam theory is an intriguing one. Also, I have read often that the license plate lamps are not on the CANBUS system.

What I am a firm believer in is communication problems caused by bad/dirty sockets or 193 / 194 bulbs used in place of 5W5 bulbs causing buzzing. The glass base of the 5W5 (what should've just been a 195-for 5 watts) is thicker.

With the car's owner out of town, I do hope we hook up. Talking to the station's new owner tomorrow. G&K

He posted this twice under different titles and different forms. The other one is here. The other one is in the correct form, this one is not.

Only modules are on the canbus. The bulbs on that car are function checked by current draw and filament integrity. LEDs draw the wrong current and have the wrong resistance unless they ar the bulbs with integral resistors. The resistor can fix the integrity issue. I have installed LEDs inside on 99-04 P2 models and the interior lights would be on dimly, only visible at night. WHen you switch of ignition and exit the car they sty on at that low level for a few minutes. The filament bulbs dont light at that current. But it does set fault codes.

I learned that the PCM is the fuel pump control module.

Since it's not in the reader's book I'll have to ask at a dealer.

Soooo NOT looking forward to that but it is an opportunity to see if they'll communicate with me.

I’m familiar with pump electronic module or PEM, Are you sure PCM is fuel related?
