AWD Turbo Removal?

How hard is it to remove a turbo from a 98 V70R? Mine needs to be rebuilt. I was under the impression that there is a special tool for removal. Advice?

Access on an AWD Volvo is tough. What symptoms have led you to rebuilding? That is a rare occurrence and it’s cheaper to buy a good used ay about $50

I've owned many Volvos and almost all of them had oil leaking from the turbo, oil build up in the hoses, etc. I can rebuild them for $45 and its easy. I've rebuilt six of them so far, just never on a AWD.

If you haven't already checked and verified, make sure you don't have a leak on the seal that mates the turbo oil return line to the oil pan. These tend to leak and all you can find is the back of the block covered in oil.

I'm only asking about REMOVAL, not signs of leakage. The car has 205k miles and it's going to get rebuilt. Has anyone removed one and if so, did you need a special tool?

stupid question: what is different on the AWD models turbo wise?

It's the same turbo, but access is difficult due to AWD underneath.

Still not the info OP is looking for (someone who has done it) but I can offer this: I remove the turbo from FWD P80 cars from the top only, by basically laying on the block while I mess with the turbo. It is a hassle but it works. There are no special tools needed for these turbos, all standard fasteners, except probably a swivel for your sockets and you may want a stubby wrench somewhere. The band clamp can be a pain. So yes it may be possible to do from the top on the AWD, but I expect there are going to be some fasteners that are a real PITA.

I haven't worked on a turbo in an AWD P80 (my R had the AWD deleted before I bought it) but on a FWD P80, it's a pretty easy job overall.

Basically, remove the downpipe nuts, remove the intake elbow, remove the oil/coolant lines (banjo bolts), and remove the oil drain. You should only need to remove the two screws that go into the turbo, but if it shows evidence of leaking, pull the drain pipe and replace that o-ring that sits in the block (pretty easy and self explanatory when you're in there, but I've heard access is a bit more tricky on the AWD cars).
Then, remove the 4 nuts that attach the turbo to the exhaust manifold and it should be free. It usually takes me about 30 minutes to remove, I've done it twice at the junkyard on P80s. I haven't installed them on P80s, but I've swapped turbos multiple times on my S60 and I've replaced coolant lines, washers, seals, etc. on my P80s.
