Volvo Replacement ETM, ifixit repair link, 36050563 and 36050564 (Yellow 2005-2014) (white 2015- on)
Does anyone happen to know if the Volvo rebuilt ETMs use a contactless sensor? Almost all the ones I've seen on ebay with just a Volvo sticker (no Magneti Marelli branding anywhere) built after 2014 have a revised looking sensor on the side that gets replaced in the contactless conversions and it looks suspiciously similar to the Sacer replacement sensors. If they do have a contactless sensor on them, I'm extremely tempted to get one over doing the sensor mod myself and just having it reprogrammed at the dealer. Some info would be much appreciated, trying to get my ETM light to disappear on a tight budget.

A yellow label Volvo ETM was exactly the same as the original design. Most cars will use two in their lifetime, but the Xemodex one is half the price of the Volvo so I think most go that route
I just reached 100k on my second ETM, the first one went 140k. I’m hoping to take this one to 300k with good behavior. My parts car had 200k on the original white label ETM and that one is still in service on another car.

I know of the difference between the usual original white label and the rebuilt yellow label, but there's a completely different white label with no Magneti Marelli branding anywhere on it usually with a build date after mid 2014, those are the ones in particular I'm asking about. If it wasn't for them having a visibly different sensor on the one side, I wouldn't be so interested in them. Considering they're about half the price or less of a Xemodex rebuild and they're genuine Volvo, they're very tempting.

All the white labelled 2015 plus Volvo rebuilds of part numbers 36050563 and 36050564 have a Volvo branded Sacer style contactless sensor.
Volvo stopped supplying yellow labelled ETMs in the late part of 2014.
About 66% of faults on these are NOT with wiper films however the contactless inclusion puts some people's minds at ease.
Check IPD's price for Xemodex rebuilds. They're a much better alternative.

If you don't mind my asking, what are the faults? I'm not stranger to small electronics and would be interested in trying to fix it myself. You need Vida to provide fault codes. There are about 20 different codes relating to ETM failure. Volvo's own ETM diagnostic chart has these codes and a flow diagram for diagnosis. In most cases the codes can be searched in Vida's database for descriptions. This may help a DIYer to zoom in on a particular section of the board. Some of them are ECM-914F ECM-903A ECM-903F etc
The aluminium wedge bonds are a weakness. XeModex redo these with copper. Also there are multiple components on the board which are weak though I can't tell you which components. A large proportion of the failures are that the board won't process one of the angle sensor signals and Vida reports 108 degrees on either sensor 1 or 2.
