Rear Camshaft Position Aperture '00 V70xc - Does orientation matter? Topic is solved

In my 2000 V70xc, I have the camshafts locked in the rear which required removal of the camshaft position aperture (I'm replacing all the camshaft seals). I have since read a post suggesting that the orientation of the aperture matters. I probably did not document it sufficiently prior to removal. I took a prior picture, but I also moved the exhaust camshaft slightly since then to install the locking tool.

How important is the rotational position of the camshaft position aperture relative to the camshaft? If the aperture position is not the same as before, what happens and how does one fix it? I'm talking about part #8 in the attached photo.

It matters - that's how the ECU knows which rotation the crankshaft is on. I haven't worked on that exact year, but I think you'll find if you look closely, it will only go back properly in one orientation. Looking at the back of the camshaft, there is a groove that is offset from center. I think the aperture has a matching surface that will only properly go one way.

Yes it matters. There are likely 3 notches on the back of cam on that year and with the corresponding 3 in the sintered iron profile wheel it can only go on one way. If not then look and you will see that two notches are perfectly inline because they were made by one cutter tool but they are not centered with the bolt hole. there is a little offset. Look at the profile wheel in the back and find out which way that two notch offset is oriented and make sure it goes on right.

Ah yes, I now see the features on the back of the wheel that will fit into three notches on the camshaft. That will make install straightforward.
