1995 850T oil cooler lines

Post by Klausc »

The top oil cooler line started leaking so I ordered OE lines. I have replaced the same lines on a 1998 V70R, so I figured an afternoon of cursing would be enough to keep oil off the garage floor.

It took an hour to get the stupid 10mm bolt out that holds the lines to the block. That is when I realized I cannot get my hand up to the bolt hole?? There is not enough room between the block and the subframe, just barely enough room to get the lines out and off.

The subframe has metal 'flanges' that stick out about 1.5 inches on the back side of the subframe. I don't remember this on the 1998, as my hand could reach the 10mm bolt.

QUESTION: Can I hacksaw this flange off? I don't see any purpose for it. The flange is about 1/8" thick and 6-8 inches long.

BTW, the flange also prevents me from removing the AC compressor bolt.

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.

I see what I did wrong :o I was trying to get at the 10mm bolt from straight up. I need to slide my creeper to the driver's side more and go in at an angle. What a pain.

I guess I'm getting too old for this kind of workout. Working upside down and backwards leaves a lot to be desired. Especially when I can't see the bolt hole because of the angle.

I may be done in a day or two. My wife wants the garage space back :D

Get a wobble on that 10 mm or, even better , a flexible extension

I agree -- that bolt is one of the most difficult to remove and install on the whole car, at least in my experience.
1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94

That bolt is top of the list of why I despise changing the P80 oil cooler lines. Second is the square gasket, third is the fasteners that hold on the thermostat, fourth is that the aluminum thermostat bends very easily. Then there is the second list of things about the job I merely dislike ...

We'll see if it actually comes up to test my thinking, but I think I would swap the oil pan and go to a biscuit cooler before I replaced another set of these lines. Every P80 needs new pickup tube o-rings anyway.
