'07 S40 2.4i - shifter gets stuck in N
Automatic transmission gear shifter gets stuck in Neutral. It used to be every now and then ....now nearly everytime. Must use the manual override to get it in gear...error reads gear shifter selector service required ( or something very close- it's my sons car) I changed the shift blind thinking the old one which was broken might be jamming it up ...no luck. Have seen something about a bad "shift selonoid" can cause it. Any ideas? Is this a major repair?....car runs good other than having to use a screwdriver to get it in gear.

How's your:

When this thing, made of swiss cheese, is broken you will get shift error messages eventually. You'll notice there's a sensor contact on it. If this is broken, replace it. You only need a bone tool (plastic pry piece) and a lot of patience... It took me over two hours to carefully remove the dash pieces...
You also might need to replace this:

Not terribly expensive, considering how much things cost for these cars. (Actually, I'm really surprised this is so cheap!!) I'd imagine this would show up in VIDA though... I'd definitely pull it out and check for resistance.

I appreciate the advice. I replaced the 1st item(shift blind) about two weeks ago. It was broken. Did not help. I'll have to see about part number 2.
Thank you again

Dear wifes f70 thank you again. You are spot on. My local Volvo dealer said the 2nd part you suggested was the next step after "shift blind" replacement. It's the circuit board that comes with the (above) gear shifter assembly that is the next likely culprit. I'm with you on the price of the part...surprisingly low cost...I hope it works.. my son is tired of changing gears with a screwdriver and a date in the car..lol

Well, at least your son is learning how to keep cool and level-headed during a date!
Good luck, Rollo! Keep us posted on how it turns out.
I'm lucky I'll never run into this problem! I drive a stick shift!
