V70 Trans DIY Cooler Upgrade - OEMish

Hi OEMish,

Thanks for your description of how to install an OEMish transmission cooler! I have a 2004 c70 and have the same symptoms you describe: rough shifting , hunting for gears etc..., but only when it warms up and is in stop and go traffic. I had the transmission serviced and computer analyzed with no improvement. My question is: did the cooler fix the problem?

Yes and No.

It did change it, but I think the trans was too far gone for this Hail Mary attempt. I resolved myself to replacing the valve body once I could find a nice "C" donor wiring harness!

Really appreciate the feedback! I've had my c70 for a couple of months and generally like it but can't rationalize the 5k to have the transmission rebuilt (car cost 4.5k!). The car has 92k miles, I think kinda low for transmission issues, so I was looking for an alternative solution.

It really depends on the care/abuse given it before you.

Do a complete flush (search for it in here)... Then do a relearn. It made a massive difference for me. If that works better but you still have issues I'd suggest a valve body or at min the 3 solenoids, before diving in for a trans.

As long as it holds properly in each gear the likelyhood of it being other than those is pretty slim. Possible, but I always exhaust my options before diving in too deep.

Hi Ken,

I had the transmission fluid changed and the computer settings redone at a transmission shop, they recommended the valve body be the next step, without guaranteeing that is the problem. Do you think I should try the servo B4 cover upgrade first?

Was the trans shop a Volvo Specialist??

I ask, because dumping the pan fluid and stomping on a gas pedal, really doesn't help when they're at this level.

A full fluid change, 13ish liters, and a Vida/Dice relearn is the best hope before diving into the guts. I did the 5L version and a relearn and it did nothing... After reading a bit more I did a full fluid exchange and a VIDA relearn and it was a night and day difference. I'm not suggesting the shop was wrong, but if they're not a Volvo shop, they might not know enough. Replacing a trans is a sure way to fix issues... 100% guarantee!!!

If the B4 hasn't been done, by all means a do it!! It'll only help, but you sounds a little far past its known fixes. Still worth a try though!! Takes about an hour... But you'll need to a VIDA relearn to make sure you get the most from it.

The c70 drove great today, 22 miles, no stop and go, rainy cool weather, and no issues. Part of me wants to ignore it, the other part of me can't. Bill
