XC 90 2008 3.2 overheated / test question

How to I test the fan? It's not coming on. What is the 3 prong female for near the harness connection on the schroud. Looking for how to hot wire to make sure it's the fan before I buy a new one. Has the red, black and small wire to the connector.

Red, Black and Violet are the inputs to the Fan Control Module (FCM).

Red is supply voltage Positive, Black is supply voltage ground. Check across the Red and Black wires for 12 Volts.

Violet is the control line from the ECM.
It looks like the Violet is a simple current control line. That is the FCM turns of when either a current flows through the Violet wire.

From the wiring diagram, I cannot determination if the FCM is turned on by applying a voltage to, or by grounding the Violet wire. If it was in front of me it would be pretty simple to make a determination. Just monitor the line with a automotive logic probe as the engine warms up. The logic probe would tell if the ECM is applying a voltage, grounding the Violet wire ..... ect.

To check the fan motor there are two wires coming out of the other side of the Fan Control Module that run to the fan motor. Figure out which one is grounded then apply 12V across the two wires to test the fan motor.

4/71 is the FCM.
6/29 is the fan motor.

Did you try turning on your A/C? It usually will trigger the fan.
