How bad is this? (Turbo crack)

Post by 850T5Ritalia »

Hi!

While I was replacing my exhaust manifold today I found this crack inside the turbine housing of the turbo. How bad is this? Can I still use it for a couple months? I’ve read about these things cracking and people saying not to worry to much.. still wanted to check because I’m a bit worried. Since I’m looking to upgrade the turbo in the near future I was only planning on using this one trough the winter. Thanks 🙏🏼

That's not good. You may be able to motor around cautiously for a while if you don't stress it or get it too hot. Or...it could just let go.

When I rebuilt my A4 Audi turbo, I bought a quality remanufactured center section from a good rebuilder in the US midwest, and just assembled it all myself. It was fairly reasonable. I had some scoring, but not too bad. I wonder if they would accept your core.

I would drive that for a half year and just keep those horsepower in the engine. You could also pull the plug on the TCV and shut off boost if you can't be trusted.

Harrys will sell you a used turbo for next to nothing, $60

Ax those eBay grifters into the ground - the $200 price points for rebuilt (they never rebuild them, by the way) are ridiculous

Since it''s the exhaust flange with a crack and the turbo is a separate item from the flange outlet, not warranted to go getting another turbo or certainly not to think about rebuilding yours (unless you want to rebuild it for unrelated reasons).

If it were me I'd be on the lookout for another turbo exhaust flange, but not overly worried about it in the meantime. Manifold cracks are extremely common but the exhaust ranges usually hold up fine. So in the context of your original question - a couple months, sure.

If you watched the Wheeler Dealer episode on the 850 R wagon they renovated, it had exactly the same issue. The turbo was fine but the casing was toast and they just replaced the flange as the turbo was otherwise in good shape.

Oh! Are we looking UP into the exhaust manifold? Then yeah, it's not the turbos fault.

If it's useful, I bought my center section (CHRA) from Midwest Turbo Connection in Hudson WI. I also sent them my compressor housing and they polished the inside where the turbine fits.

But he says "inside the turbine housing," and I see the turbine there right next to the crack. I really can't tell which way I'm looking.

Im sorry, the pictures are a bit vague. The upper pic is looking into the exhaust turbine housing from the manifold side and the lower pic shows the crack from the other side, looking into the turbine housing from the down pipe side.

Thanks for the help guys. I’m gonna install it and drive it without stressing it to much. See if it will last trough the winter 😄

It will be fine. The Creator loves Italy and gives you great food. Art, music, museums, and long lived cracked turbo housings.
