2002 s60 turbo replacement

this is my first post here,i looked and couldnt find a related topic.. i recently purchased the car with a smoking issue.. had it diagnosed as a bad turbo.. replacement from the dealer is very expensive.. i have done some research and could possibly save myself a small fortune if i replace it myself.. the problem is i cant find any info on mechanical procedures or any info in general. is this something i should attempt on my own? i am a decent mechanic and have access to a full garage.. is there anything i should be leary of? any info or advice would greatly be appreciated! thanx in advance

Before you dive into replacing the turbo, do a PCV service. A clogged PCV can cause issues like you describe and cause the seals in the turbo to leak. Theres a few guides on here on servicing the PCV.

i asked the shop that diagnosed the turbo if it could possibly be a pcv issue and he said with as much oil as is coming out of the exhaust pipe that there is no way.. thanx for the advice tho definatly appreciated... so how hard is it to remove the turbo and put a replacement in? i am sure someone has replaced one but i cant find a post on it

You will need a good tap and die set as a bolt always breaks. It is very rare to have a turbo go . You could take off the charge pipe and inspect the amount of oil coming out . It would be dripping from the drain in the inter cooler under the passenger headlight area (drains into the under radiator air guide). I would inspect the turbo before removing it.

Here are the instructions for a T3 - I wasn't sure which engine you had. Buy new turbo to manifold bolts with the gasket - you will need them.

A friend of mine replaced a perfectly good turbo because his mechanic said it was bad. It ended up being the PCV clogged. So trust me. Do your homework before replacing a part that is perfectly fine. Part of the smoking issue your having is not the turbo. If you have driven your car enough. You can tell if the turbo isnt working properly..

Oh and if you findout it is a PVC issue. That alone is a 700 dollar fix. There could be a slite chance the rear main seal is bad to. Add another 600 dollar fix. Good luck..

My thoughts are as follows. Turbos well maintained last over 200k. Poorly maintained 150k. They do fail and much is dependent on service history.

Turbo or PVC system - generally one has oil leaks all over the place - so if you have only oil smoke and signs of excess oil in the charge pipe that would hint towards turbo.

I have only done one turbo rebuild on the 2.4/2.5 variants. Nothing too hard. Another member posted instructions so you should be set.

A Bad PVC will smoke and leak under the engine. It will also cause the turbo to leak at times. Labor alone is almost 8 hrs to get to the problem, clean it out and put back to together. After you replace gaskets, dropped and lost nuts and bolts. The exhaust manifold has to come off, along with a bunch of diff hoses. If you don't connect everything back the way it was before you touched it? You will have a nightmare on your hands. Read up before you tackle the fix and save yourself a bunch of money. Or have your friendly mechanic do the work for big money. Good
