Code A2: 2-1-4

Post by vince »

Hello all,

As my wife was driving my 1995 850 Turbo Wagon baby on the highway, the engine felt like it was "slipping" - I think that's the best analogy I can find - at speeds around 70 mph. It did it only once at those higher speeds. At the same moment, the Check Engine light came on, and the engine never "slipped" in the same way for the other 40 miles of the trip.

Once home, I checked port A2, and got 2-1-4, RPM sensor signal erratic. Nothing from A1, or anywhere else - except the A3 1-4-1 and 1-4-2 which are due to an ABS problem I keep deferring...

Thinking of RPM and slippage issues, I recalled that, every now and then, when I gradually slow down for red lights and stop signs, sometimes, as I reach almost stopped speeds (i.e. below 10 mph), the engine "slips upwards", as in "it wants all of a sudden to accelerate a little".

I hope my descriptions are understandable, and they help you point me in a certain direction. Anything life-threatening? How easy is the repair? My buddy who owned the Torx screwdrivers I used for many good deeds - i.e. the tailgate struts (wagon) and the odometer gear replacement - has now moved 4500 miles away, so I might have to equip myself a little, but I'm fearless... :)

Thanks to all for your input.

Code 2-1-4 can get set if the coil wire is to close to the RPM sensor wire. The RPM sensor wire, in its natural state, loops up just below the distributor. The factory cure is to fold the sensor wire away from the ignition wires and secure it with a ty-wrap.

The RPM sensor signal is one of the more important signals and the car will not behave well if that signal is not correct. The engine will try to stall and the transmission can make some poor shifting decisions.

Oh, sorry I've been absent for a while, and I just remembered I had posted a good 10 days ago! :)

So, you say that most likely I don't need to replace that part, just "relocate" it using some tie-wrap? I was looking at autopartswarehouse.com and ipd, and they didn't seem to carry that part, anyhow... Thanks!
