Hose off air cleaner lid
Hi my name is john. New here. I just bought a 98 s70 and it's chugging out when we get up to 50 mpg or so. Gonna do a fuel filter and pump tomorrow but trying to run through other stuff. There is a broke hose coming off the air cleaner going down the front of the engine and then under and I cant find reference to this anywhere. Doesnt even exist in most pictures of same engine. New with volvos any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Any leaks in the intake air and vacuum systems will cause erratic engine operation. Small ones in vacuum lines are a common problem on the p80's.
I've had a couple of issues with the accordion hose from the filter box to the intake—one was a tear on the back side so I didn't see it immediately and thought I had a fuel pump failure or blocked fuel filter. The other was a loose hose clamp at the filter box—that one caused the engine to flail all over, could barely keep it running to get home.

I think it is more likely you have an air intake leak than a fuel pump failure. The filter change is just good routine maintenance and I would do this on a newly acquired vehicle. As JimBee said, look for leaks in the air hose from mass air flow meter and any of the many vacuum lines. Unmeasured air into the engine will not be matched with measured fuel to the injectors and the engine will starve.

Re-attach and/or replace all of the vacuum lines. Here are the comprehensive threads about vacuum lines for your S70:
turbo car - viewtopic.php?t=63615
non-turbo car - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=65002
The non-turbo one has better detail about lines off the air box.
If the hose you are talking about doesn't seem to be covered there, post up a pic we can help.

I always have to write a paragraph to explain this, and this sentence does it beautifully.Unmeasured air into the engine will not be matched with measured fuel to the injectors and the engine will starve.

I replaced the fuel filter and the problem calmed down. Now I'm faced with a key that wont turn and and a hypothetical cylinder lock replacement. I have replacement hoses in my cart but I'm waiting to get paid. I really like this car but frustrations are compiling.. thank you to all who replied I appreciate your time and unput

John, on a tight budget, you have to move slowly on the diagnostic path , and not guess at parts replacement. Volvo parts are high quality and expensive as many last 300k miles or more.
