I've driven my 2000 V70 manual for 17 years and 210,000 miles with no significant accidents. That record was broken two days ago. On the highway in traffic, a reckless driver slammed into the car behind me, slid past him, then slammed into me. Thankfully, I think the car is damaged less than it appears. I need a new tailgate, bumper cover, and quarter panel, but I think the frame and suspension may be ok. I am going to have my body shop review the issue.
The biggest challenge seems to be the quarter panel. How can that be replaced when it's welded into place and runs the whole length of the top of the car? The body shop said a used one would require twice as much work as a new one, but can I even get a new 19 year old body panel?
I'll take any advice for repairing the car from anyone who has recovered from similar damage. I'm honestly not even sure what issues I'll run in to, thus what questions to ask. Working with insurance is my top priority because I get the feeling they won't pay for anything, but that's a long story.

It's time to say Good Buy on another V70.

No way I'm giving up that easily. 10 years and 100k miles ago, the engine blew, so I bought a used one and had it installed.
Public service announcement: I recommend people in rust-prone states check their bumper brackets and replace them if they are rusty.

Presumably that broken rear window means the car flexed enough to pinch and twist the tailgate, blow out the glass. As he said it could be good buy not good bye, but it looks like end of the line for this one.
Keep us posted if you don't mind, I'm curious how it comes out.

I think a good bodyshop could be able to fix that. I think abscate has a body with even the right color to get rid off if you go the used parts route.
Does the tailgate still open once you remove that Hundai thing? If so, does it hinge up and down correctly?

2000 model with 210K miles.
The book value is $500 or so.
You are probably attached to it emotionally...
The repair is going to be $3000-$4000 range.
I doubt the insurance co from the Huyndai is going to pay that.
Let it go, and buy a 2004-2007 V70 with < 100K miles...

I meant Good Buy. With the insurance payout he will need to find a Good Buy on another V70.erikv11 wrote: ↑24 Nov 2019, 20:33 Presumably that broken rear window means the car flexed enough to pinch and twist the tailgate, blow out the glass. I'd be shocked if that hasn't bent something integral - even in the last picture the frame rail looks to have been affected. Costs involved in fixing the rear quarter panel will be astronomical relative to the value of the car - and that's before you consider the other required items, like bumper, tailgate, rear lights, and indeed any rejigging it needs to be squared.
I do love your plate though.

Looks unsuccessfully for the sob icon.
Glad you are ok, that’s most important.
It’s certainly beyond economical repair, so insurance will be limited to book value of car. You fight that battle to raise that number up for the payout, then you battle them to make the buy back number low, it’s usually about 10% of the value, so for a $100-200 you get to keep the carcass.
My parts car is stone black. The donor piece comes as the entire side of the car including the door frames, front and back. That’s a huge job to do that , 20-25 hour welding time ! Then $500 to paint.
Will NH let you drive that with a munched back quarter panel , new tailgate, lights until you sort out options?
I wanted to get my parts car off to scrap in the next week or two, but I will hold off on that

What a bummer that this happened to you. But as Abscate said, you are ok and that's the main thing.
Do you have a photo of the quarter panel without that Hunday biting it's teeth into it?
From staring at the photos I am thinking that the frame was possibly not compromised. The rear door gaps look fine and I would assume the door still opens? The tailgate glass may have shattered from the impact on the tailgate itself.
Maybe this is fixable with a used tailgate, back lights and bumper with new brackets. Then you can drive it again and explore options for body panel repair.
