Our xc70 (2006 187 k miles) is leaking oil near the oil pump / crankshaft. Has anyone hands on experience replacing this seal and could this be the source?
See attached picture taken after cleaning the area and driving a bit.
PCV system done & wasn’t blocked.

- If no oil on driveway, just monitor it.
- Clean the area and put dye in engine oil to see where it comes from.
- If proven to be main crank seal (unusual before 200K miles), then TB needs to come out, oil pump removed to replace the seal.
Use only Corteco or Volvo Genuine seal. Info of DIY is in forum.
PS: Very often it comes from higher up such as cam seals from the VVT hub area. If so, search for the posts in volvoforum by "jordank".

Thanks, I was just reading and saw your posts on the 850 platform regarding the crankshaft seal.
Over time is does drip on the street, I managed to solved the leaking angle gear ( seals and O-ring) so one more to do. The car is getting close to 200k, the cam seal are a bit sweating but no large leaks.
I will add some dye and monitor

You may also check the VVT hubs. One of mine sprung a leak around 180K. I noticed several other posts with leaky VVT hubs around 180K. June

Front crank seal or oil pump gasket - most likely the crank seal. The harmonic balancer and crank gear have to come off, but everything above can be left undisturbed. You can lock your cams via zip ties, make sure they don't rotate, and mark your belt with nail polish or white out to get your timing back to original. If you haven't done all the other items (timing belt, water pump, pulleys, ...), now is the time. You say the cams are leaking a bit - tough call as the front ones are a pain to change.
It is not a bad job. I guess, depending on what you want to do with the car long term, it may be worth the few hours and $10-15 to do just the seal. Oil on the belts is not good long term.

Thanks much for the advice.
Short term goal is the become member of the 200k miles club.
I have done a lot of maintenance to it and would like to keep it driving.
Unfortunately my son got rear ended yesterday. Son is okay. Damage to the car appears to be only cosmetic damage to the rear bumper.
He was hit by an old Toyota 4 runner which ended up having a leaky radiator due to the pushed in front bumper. Got to love the Volvo.

Rear Bumper will buff right out...lol...
- Front CAM seals usually leak around 150K.
- Front CRANK seal leaks around 200K+.
I have fixed so many leaking seals in my life that I now develop a new philosophy...if no oil on driveway, I just monitor the leak until it is more severe, then fix it then.

If you plan on monitoring the leak give the ATP AT-205 Re-Seal Stops Leaks a try. Not sure how those seals are made but it could be a stop gap before replacing them.
