my 98 v70xc sounds like a choo choo train

Post by llama_of_doom »

when its cold out my car starts making this noise only when its moving. It sounds like metal scraping on metal. it seems like it was coming from one of my wheels but its been recently jumping around now its appearing on and off from the driver side front wheel and both rear wheels. The sound seems to only appear when its cold out, cold enough to freeze water cause that snow flake light in the dash lights up. Its not really apparent or at least barely noticeable when its warmer out. But when it is cold its very very loud and a bit unsetteling, I dont feel comfortable driving it with the way it is now. The sound also speeds up as the car speeds up and it doesnt go away when the car heats up it actually seems to be affected when the car runs over a bump.

Could be a stuck E brake, not uncommon

is the ebrake on all 4 wheels because like I said it started in the back but last night I herd it at the front driver side too. Something else that it did was when I was backing up out of my driveway the whole car locked up it sounded like I backed into something I braked put it in park went outside to check but nothing and thats when all these problems begun happening last night. It happened before but it got really bad last night so much so that I didnt want to drive the car to my destination I got one of my friends to drive.

Sure sounds like the e-brake to me if you're locking up backing out. Try NOT to put the e-brake on when you park your car tonight then see if the problem is gone. As far as your other wheels making the noise, I can't say but wondering if your tires are reacting to the cold weather. How are they wearing?

they are wearing evenly from what it looks like. I do have a problem with my ebrake it doesnt work with the handle I know its something at the brake itself so I suppose its possible that the problem is my ebrake. If it is how should I proceed? does the whole caliper have to be replaced?

alright well I pulled my wheels off and it turns out my driver side rear rotor cracked and a piece of it was jammed between the rotor and the dust shield thats what the noise was. The chunk of rotor also ripped off my ebrake shoes so I had pieces of that in there.... ahhhh what a mess but all fixed now
