2.5T Oil pump bolts: sealant or none?

Post by - Pete - »

I've never seen mention anywhere of using sealant on these, but when I took mine out there appears to be some on them.

Are these like the 2-4 oil pan bolts that require sealant?

Flywheel bolts have a thick layer of yellow thread sealant. They must be used new (or properly cleaned and resealed =)

Do you see anything yellow on them or inside threads in the pump? I honestly never got to the oil pump, so don't know, but did RMS last winter, which needs sealed bolts.

I’m doing crank & cam seals on our 280k XC. Whatever is on the threads is so discolored from oil it’s tough to tell.

Theoretically I think the green paper gasket is supposed to seal off the bolt holes from leaking but I’m wondering if Volvo doped the threads as an extra precaution?

Also during disassembling the rear of the head to lock the cams I found this little guy. Any idea what that is or where it came from? Looks like it hasn’t been in service for some time.

Googling around, it looks like Volvo bolt p/n 987348 has some white sealant on the threads closer to the head. I don't know, add some Loctite White (565)? Or buy new bolts ;)

Don't recognize that little guy. Not sure it's a part of our motor.

They should have copper washers. Sealant on underside of head would do. This is done as a surety measure in the even there is porosity or the casting allowed the drill and tap of the oil pump bolt holes to go through. The gasket would stop oil from passing across the back face of pump but do nothing if it could get through threads or through a porous spot in casting.

Interesting Jimmy, thank you. Mine have no washers & Looking up the Volvo part number VTL posted it appears there are no copper washers on those bolts either, just white thread locker.

I had already reinstalled the oil pump before I saw your post. I ended up using the “holy crap, I forgot how pink this is” Volvo anaerobic sealant on the bolts.
