Been a Volvo owner since 1988, however no little about the newer 2008+.
I'm going to look at a xc70 2008 any ideas of the issues with the newer 3.2.
I had an xc70 2006 with the normal valve body transmission issues.
Does the 2008 have the same issues? Is the breather box setup the same?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Madness
xc70 2008 any insights

Some thoughts on buying your first P3 Volvo: You're driving experience with the 2006 XC70 (a turbo w/ AWD) might leave you disappointed with the 3.2 I-6 engine. You should test drive the 3.2 vs. the T6, so you can compare them for driving feel. Buying the first production year (2008) for the P3 XC70? A great many subtle improvements occur in the first 3 years of production, including software bugs caught and fixed ("continuing engineering"). Based on that thinking,
I'd be looking at 2011-12 as a good entry point for the P3 XC70. Make a list of the must-have features and options, e.g., heated front seats, power-operated tailgate, active-bending headlights. The ABLs are terrific if you do rural, nighttime driving.

I've debated this same topic in my head numerous times. I'm really feeling the look of the P3 XC70 T6 specifically. I love the look of the P80 chassis V70XC's and the P2 XC70/XC70R with AWD. I've owned 3 P80 chassis V70XC's and loved all of them. Presently own the 2004 P2 XC70 w/factory HID's, the B5254T2 w/dual VVT and love this Volvo. We also own the Volvo XC90 T6, which my wife loves. Anyway I've been thinking about getting a P3 but I've read a few times that I'd be disappointed with the N/A 3.2l. Other than that motor I've heard mostly good things. I'd like to hear other members experience with the P3 chassis... pros and cons.
I have a 2010 version of the same car with over 350,000 Kms on it. Personally, I think this engine/car is better than the previous P2 models (I have owned 17 Volvos in the past from a 122S to a 05' V70R). The car has more room inside and is smoother on the road with very good front suspension - but mushier than the P2 (but comfortable on the 1 and only road across Canada)! Transmission (automatic) is excellent and I have had no trouble with it - I have had both automatic and manual transmission failures with my earlier P2 cars. The engine/drivetrain in the car is a Ford design and is shared with the Land Rover Freelander 2 and sometimes parts are cheaper from the LR dealer (especially in the UK). Case in point - Rear differential is non-rebuildable according to Volvo and has to be completely replaced as one unit (thousands in dealer-dollars). Land Rover offers rebuild kits for it (bearings/seals, crush tube etc..) readily available at the dealer or online at a fraction of the cost of replacement.... Engine has a timing chain, not a belt - BIG plus!!! As with all modern manufacturers, plastic is featured rather heavily under the hood (not as bad as BMW, but there is a lot more of it!!) - inlet manifold is made from the wonderful stuff and will suffer long-term from distortion and leaks.... I have already replaced the O-rings on mine. I like the interior of this car and the modern, open feel that it has - the seats are still as comfortable as the earlier cars! In summary, It's still a Volvo wagon in all the good ways - practicality of use, body corrosion protection and safety features - but it is still a modern car and will probably never get to the high mileages of the earlier models due to it's increased complexity, cost/value ratios, and poorer choice of materials! If you can get the T6 version that's even better!

I own two P3's
2010 S80 3.2 (135,000 miles (218,000 km))
2008 LR2 3.2 (122,000 miles (196,000 km))
Both vehicles run really well.
The 3.2 in my S80 is the low emissions PZEV so it only makes 225 Hp vs the 235 Hp in the LR2.
And the S80 is front wheel drive vs the all wheel drive system in the LR2.
Because the LR2 is heavier it is also slower than the S80 even though it has more power.
Note: for me both vehicles feel sufficiently fast.
I bought the LR2 brand new in 2008 and I bought the S80 used in 2018.
I picked a front wheel drive S80 with the 3.2 because I wanted something really nice that isn't expensive to maintain. (See my S80 $10,000 challenge for more details about cost)
I expect both of these vehicles to get to 225,000 (360,000 km) without replacing anything extremely expensive.
I am very encouraged that 333joanie is already there with her 2010 XC70.
As for what needs looking after, take a look at this link
Look for the following information
- High Mileage Maintenance items for 3.2
- Typical repairs for high mileage 3.2
- Less common repairs

Good luck
Paul
PS I will use Land Rover parts on the Volvo and/or Volvo parts on the Land Rover based on cost.
