Just thought I'd give an update here. My car is still up on blocks as the piston is so far out now I can't even put the old worn pads back in. I can also confirm that the Autel ESB301 does NOT work for the XC90. Autel says that the MX808 would but that is a much more expensive tool. I'm going to try the iCarsoft one now. Will let you know what happens.

You will probably have to download the software update ( iCarsoft VOL V2.0 for Volvo/Saab ) from icarsoft; the instructions and update tool are at the bottom of this page:

Just a quick note to the previous poster, wanderdune, I got an email response from iCarsoft yesterday that said they do not support the 2017 Volvo XC90. :-( I already ordered the tool so I will try the update and see for myself when it arrives tomorrow but if it does not work then there is no one to ask about it and I will have to return it. I might just put an order in now for the Autel MX808...

I got the iCarsoft Vol II today and after a software update to the memory card in it, the tool does see a 2017 XC90 and that's something you can choose. You can even enter maintenance mode and see all of the brake values. You just can't change anything. It complains that the vehicle needs to be in operating mode. I've tried it with the ignition both on and off. I don't know what else to do since iCarsoft tech support said this will not work with a 2017 XC90. I guess I'll return the iCarsoft Vol II and wait for the Autel MX808 to come.

Hah! You know its funny I watched that video in the very beginning to see how all the parts go together and come apart. I missed the key part where he says to turn the motor shaft by hand CLOCKWISE to release the piston. Wow. One piece of advice to anyone reading, you need to put the caliper on first before you tighten down the electric motor because tightening down the electric motor will push the piston out just enough so that you cannot put the caliper on over the new pads and you'll have to start over by taking the electric motor back off to squeeze the piston back in some more. Now all is in and back together and I pumped the brakes a few times until they felt firm and pushed the parking brake on and off. But there's a warning light in the dash saying Warning, Parking Brake Not Fully Disengaged. Anyone know what that's about? And maybe that's why the pads wore out so fast in the first place?

Sorry. The message was Parking Brake Not Fully Released I think. I did a short drive with that message and constant beeping. I stopped. Did my errand, and when I started it up again the message went away. Let's hope it stays away and I'm done. I did want to check the brake fluid level. Does anyone know where the brake fluid reservoir or master cylinder is? My google querries kept turning up XC60 stuff....

There is a cover on driver's side in the cowl just in front of windshield. Pull the rubber weatherstrip off the ridge from left past that cover. The tabs at forward bottom edge hold it so pry them a little and it will lift up at forward edge and come off. Then you'll see it down in there. DOT4+. Castrol makes it and so does Pentosin and then there is genuine Volvo.
