What did you do to your P2 Volvo today?

All I've done to Betty the Volvo is clean her off for my wife. She has been very reliable so far (the car), and a big bonus is this car makes heat right away! My Audi takes 15 minutes of blowing cool air on your legs - I must not have burped it correctly. But Betty is blowing hot air and melting the windows right away, and the seats are warm, warm. It's the first car I've had that the mirror melters actually work - another bonus!

Finally, after a year of seeing no high beam light on dash, decided to fix it.

Last year, on this day, just before we close at work I needed a WOF (warrant of fitness). I had failed for the blue hb indicator dash light. Figured it was a lamp, figured wrong. I caused an airbag fault by hot connecting DIM being in a rush. Cost me $50 to have that cleared. I couldn't clear that with my OBDII reader bugger it. It was intermittent at the time and so I managed to get it through while it was working ok. Oh, and also the display on the left became erratic after this.

So, one year to the day today, I pulled out the DIM again. I had watched some videos where people are reflowing the IC's all over the place. I watched a bunch and decided to do just the top left one and the six little six legged ic's around it. Here's how it goes....

I do one leg at a time. It does take a little longer than drag-flow soldering, but can save a lot of problems (sorting bridges, bent legs munting pads). I clean away the blue with IPA and some cotton buds. Run a flux pen along one side at a time. Do under magnification and flow at pad and move up to the leg on each joint. I set iron to 350 deg C with fine tip. I checked under microscope afterward for any bridges or other problems.

Worked a treat.

I sought a brake bleeder nipple to have on hand before tackling the removal of a sheared one.
My V70 came with it. Every time the wheel is off I give it a touch of penetrant.

RockAuto had 'em for $1.40 each. However, only selecting a 10 pack would allow the ordering process to continue.
One European parts source had 'em for every Volvo ever made except our P2's.
Yet another had none.
IPD had genuine Volvo nipples for $8.50 each.
Apparently small order shipping subsidizes their free shipping offer for larger orders.

So I went to an Advance Auto Parts which had been "Coast Automotive" years before.
CA was a Mecca for both stock and racing machines. They supported lots of local mechanics.
Their Pennsylvania Dutch country warehouse showed 80 in stock but the computer wouldn't let the counterman order any.

My man diligently worked the phone and 10 minutes later he directed me to another serious shop.
This one was a Car Quest -part of No. Jersey's P & A Auto & Truck Parts.
These can be small, dirty but very competent shops.
Since AAP bought the entire Car Quest company I conclude these singular, older shops don't adapt to the standardized AAP retail look.
Perhaps those stores' leases are for "dba CQ only".

Well, the damn things were 79¢ each. Two cost $1.68 with tax.
WBH p/n 3019410RY and that they're Chinese sourced is all I have to give you.

It's barely Volvo related, but Wednesday we lost our beloved and devoted dog Winston the wire-haired Griffon. He is my son and daughter-in-law's dog, but a family circle of people cared for him and made his life full and loving. He was so attached to all of us, and good to everyone he met. A kind and noble shaggy beast he was. Four years old.

I take care of him during the day, working at home, and on our morning walk, running in the snow in the park, he collapsed and died, apparently of a sudden cardiac failure, maybe an enlarged heart. He was a 70 pound Griff, which is on the big side and may be a clue. He lived for joyous running, and loved the snow. My job was to make sure nothing happened to him.

I scooped him up, ran for my neighbors Ocean Race blue wagon and she ran a red light and raced to the vet with my wife doing compressions (we don't know how to do that on dogs...), but it wouldn't have mattered how fast we reacted.

He is dearly missed by the entire neighborhood, including all the little school kids who know him and see him every morning. He always wore a scarf, because he was a stylish boy, and mean dogs don't wear scarves. Little kids know that.

Sorry to go off topic and be a downer here. He was my best friend. A tiny album of the hundreds of pics we have of him.....
