Yea, two cats. We've been boarding them... for a year now.
Thanks again. Lots of info collected yesterday. I'll update this later today.

Since the 27th, I spent another day vacuuming ducts, researching, bought and mounted a carbon monoxide detector, ordered a replacement "HEPA" filter for my Dirt Devil upright, snooping, scoping, photographing and talking to anyone with knowledge of this phenomenon (like ABSCATE, thank you).
Still, levels aren't good. I think I brought them down a bit.
Today the PM2.5 and PM10 readings range from 50/60 to 112/130. The three homes of friends/family I tested were all under 6/6.
Not good enough.
Whatever the case, I took DIY as far as I could short of buying an HVAC van. I found a duct cleaning service that is coming in the morning. I just couldn't get all the way down the ducts. I gave it a valiant effort I think.
Thanks for everyone's thoughts and help.

Duct tech said it’s "bad, bad… we usually get this much dust in the supplies, not the return ducts."
Job done. Gunk removed. New furnace filters in.
Now I have to get the furnace serviced and cleaned because he said it’s filthy and I saw it.
I'm getting there. $550 in -- duct service, filters -- and around 40 hours.

Duct cleaner offered duct disinfectant for $129. I declined. We don't have mold in Colorado. Is there another reason I should have gone with this upsell?
Other bad things?
