I've driven through the snow a few times and my all terrain tires and traction control seemed to be working well.
However last weekend, I got stuck several times. In one instance the rear wheels were on dry asphault and would not engage (car was in reverse). In other instances while starting off and maintaining speed uphill, the front wheels would spin in the snow and again, the back wheels were not recieving power. Winter mode seems to help slightly, but still the back tires are not spinning.
When a wheel slips....the yellow triangle with the "swervy" symbol blinks on and the car seems to redistribute power between the front wheels. Once both front wheels are spinning, the light blinks off and the car assumes I am going 10-25 mph and the rpms ramp up accordingly. Is this light the "AWD light"? (Would something else light up if the rear wheels were engaging?)
Any ideas on what the problem may be or things I could check to determine this? Could it be traction sensors or some sort of clutch that controls power transmission to the rear?
thanks in advance for your help
AWD not engaging in my '02 S60
Hi,
It could be that your angle gear (bevel Gear) is shot, or it could be a problem with the Haldex AWD control unit.
To test the Angle gear, get the car on a hoist with all four wheels off the ground. Spin the front wheels manually, and check whether the driveshaft leading to the rear wheels is spinning. IF it is not spinning, then your angle gear needs to be replaced. This is very expensive!! It cost me $2400 to have Volvo replace it on my 2003 XC70.
If the driveshaft spins, then you could have a problem with the Haldex unit which is at the rear of the driveshaft. It has clutches that engage when sensors sense that the front wheels are spinning faster than the rear wheels, thus distributing power to the rear wheels. Check the AWD fuse, to see if it is blown. Otherwise I'm not sure how to check this unit.
If it is the angle gear, I hope you have an extended warranty. Good luck!

I really know nothing about these systems but I do know that Haldex was not standard on these until '03. JRL should know more. Hopefully he'll chime in here in a bit.

Haldex
Angle gear
But now many have found it's the DEM module
(the control module itself for the Haldex)
The dealer knows how to test it and look to see if the little hose came loose and it accumulated with dirt clogging it up and causing it not to work properly
If that's the case a cleaning and properly refitting should make it OK again.
There's a new TNN about this
