1990 740 200K miles

Post by jonesg »

Hi there, I have a 1990 740 automatic. 200K miles.
My first volvo.
This car doesn't have the 2 fuel pumps, just the 1 pump in the tank.

Last yr the plugs/wires/cap/rotor were changed
I also changed the timing belt,
it ran fine for 1 yr after I tuned it up.
Previous owner didn't do much,
it had the original timing belt with 160K miles !

My symptoms are hard starting, have to keep my foot on the gas usually to get it warmed once I get it going, after that it will usually idle around 7-800 rpm.

When driving, it bogs down severly, so its not driveable right now, often chugs along at 10 mph then seems to unload and accelerate, but I often have to shift the gears manually to make sure it stays above 2K or it'll bog down again.

A constant code is cold start injector 3-2-1
Its not possible to clear this code so I suspect the TSB was applied.
The car drove fine for 1 yr with the code anyway.
I recently changed the FPR (it was leaking)
changed the MAP sensor
Radio relay
fuel pump relay
fuel filter (but not the checkvalve, will do that)
Swapped the cold start injector with a known good (used) one.
Coolant temp sensor.
New oil trap, cleaned all pipes out.
New intake gasket
cleaned throttle body, new gasket there.

I noticed when I changed ther FPR there was only a trickle of fuel at the rail, no pressure to speak of and it had just been running.
I was expecting a fuel shower.

I've checked brickboard, I could use a bit of insight too.
What else?

Is this the Regina system ignition? Recently took car of a friends. Changed crank position sensor, fuel pump relay and used some CRC air mass meter cleaner. Has been running well since. These are wear items.

Yeh Dick, its regina and those regina parts often cost over twice as much as regular Bosch parts. Where do you get CRC Air mass meter cleaner?

although the regina doesn't have an air mass meter,
its some other little sensor. MAF ? Mass Air Flow?

Picked it up at Napa and did clean that mass air flow sensor. All the same thing, just different names for accomplishing the same thing. Anyway, it is a simple unit to clean. Squirt all the orifices (?sp) and shake it dry. Am sure any air mass sensor cleaner would work, but make sure that is what it is.

Thanks, I'll give it a try, the car won't start without ether now so ...

I ran my hand down the TPS wire and the insulation is falling off down by the transmission. I'll add that to the shopping list.

I tried everything but no dice....

and so that left the fuel pump as the likely culprit,
I got one at autozone for $65 and a sock filter,
it runs like a clock now.

It took me all day to complete the job, all the hose clamps (except the high pressure fitting) were rusted frozen and had to be cut off and replaced. Getting the bugger reinstalled again was a trick.

The old pump motor (original AC Delco) had toasted the + brush wire and turned it into charcoal. All the current was being passed via the brush spring, not too well I guess.

I think I could do it again in less than an hr but what a learnin curve.!

The new pump has great pressure, it immediately blew a hole in the fuel return hose beneath the power steering reservoir.

Good to know as I have been helping a friend with the Regina. Congrads on solving the problem.
