SIPS in action

Post by yanga001 »

Hi everyone,

so a few weeks back i got into a fairly bad crash in the trusty v70 and i was very impressed with the SIPS technology. It was an icy road that i took a little to fast and ended up hitting the tree on the drivers door at around 60 km/h.

Came out with no injuries and better yet, my dog who was in the trunk came out walking. Crawled out of the passenger door and was shook up more then anything. At the time, all my mind could think of was that i crashed my favourite ride. Anyways, ive attatched some photos to illustrate the effectiveness of the safety that goes into the 98 v70's. The 99's have even more features including curtain airbags, and computer controlled side airbags. My side airbag did not deploy as the seat was not hit directly.

However, the seat did go off the rails and push about a half foot towards the passenger side which saved my back and head from any impacts. The B pillar was effective in transferring the energy away from my door and was probably the reason that tttshere were no injuries.
The car was and still is a tank, it still starts and drives which makes it a pretty good parts car.

Lessons learned were never cheap out on winter tires, and buy another volvo.

Nice to see that the old Volvo still keeps us safe.

As a Canadian can you use studded tires?

cheap tires suck! especially the Chinese ones.

other than that, glad it protected you. Sad to lose a nice ride like this, though.

We can during specific months depending on the province. Southern Ontario does not usually get bad enough to merit them but ill look into it for the next set.

In Western Canada in Alberta it depends where you live. In southern Alberta, and specifically Calgary, we have a by-law preventing the use of studded tires. Reason being in an urban setting where we have long periods some years between snow fall with dry pavement they destroy the road surface. You can get fined for having them on your car, but never heard of that happening. What makes me laugh is those who buy only 2 tires?!? They may have winters all around but studs only on the driven tires, or those that leave summer/3 seasons on the non-driven wheels and winters on the driven ones. Idiots!! Technically you are also not allowed to only sell only 2 winter tires.

Many years ago (35 or so) when still in Scotland I was hit by another car the police estimated was at 80mph. He came through a center barrier on the highway and hit me on the driver's door/B pillar and slid along the whole side of the car and spun me 360 around and I ended up on the crash barrier. Not a mark on me even though I was travelling at 50 mph in the other direction. What was I driving? A Volvo 145 and I credit that car with saving my life. Traffic cop said if I was not in a Volvo or possibly a Mercedes I would not still be around.

No air-bags or SIPS but fixed 3 point seat-belts. Again car still ran and could be driven (not legally) after replacing rear tire with spare event though car was actually twisted along the length!

Sorry to see the end of the car, but glad you survived unharmed.

Neil.

I am echoing everyone else here, but I am really glad to see you unharmed.

This is the reason why both of my daughters (in addition to me) drive Volvo's. Safety first.

Using 2 new studded tires in the front and ordinary tires on the rear axle is really dangerous.
The tires with the best traction should ALWAYS be at the rear, whether the car is fwd or rwd doesn't matter.

The ability to get traction on a ice road at low speeds is probably better having the studded tires in the front on a fwd car but the risk that the rear loses traction driving 55 mph on a highway is much more deadly.

Don't say that, didn't you got whiplash? I'm sure you could sue that tree for something, it's clearly at fault here! Ever heard of 'right of way'?
