S60 AWD Low Gas Warning Light
I had an unusual occurance in my S60 after about a year of use. The reserve gas light came on about 5 miles before my destination. In the past I have driven the car at least 50 miles with this light. This time when I tried to start the car the next day I was stunned to see it acting as if it was out of gas. Sure enough, when I added a gallon it started. It ran rough a mile or two then returned to normal. When I filled the tank to the top, it only took 16 gallons. That has not happened again. However, I notice when in the rare instance the gas gets low enough for the reserve light to come on, the car starts roughly the next morning. I am in the habit of not letting this happen now, but it is a concern that I do not have a reserve or any slack in the warning. I cannot understand why it acts this way with 5 gallons remaining. Any similar experiences from others? Thanks.

Just don't let it get down that far.
When it does, your fuel pump starts pumping the heavier sludge and junk that collects on the bottom of your tank. Then your lines and filter get clogs, and your injectors may get clogged.
It's best to avoid that whole situation.

I have decided to be extra careful, although I assumed if there was debris it would go to the fuel filter first. It does seem an odd design to not be able to use the any of the last 4-5 gallons of a 21 gallon tank. I have never had that issue with other cars. I may ask the dealer about inspecting the lines or cleaning the tank.

Water will form in the tank of even the highest-engineered car.

I run my S60 down to fumes before filling up. The only problem is that it leaves me with a $35 fill up.
